In most cases it's the best friends who end up dating and falling deeply for each other. If you want to be her friend, by all means go for it, I'm sure she would appreciate your friendship but even more that you are staying as friends, instead of pushing her to get into a relationship with you. Showing respect like that will probably make her consider it.

But,
If you dont stay friends with her then you both lose out. You don't get to hangout with your crush, and she won't be around to get to know you better, then you will have to continue on, trying to forget about her. And trust me, trying to forget or dissmiss the feelings for someone is MUCH harder then what it seems.

I'd definitely recommend you two stay friends. let a healthy friendship grow into something more passionate. :]
