We knew "The Hunger Games" was going to be big, but landing the third-best opening weekend of all time is beyond impressive. After pulling in $19.7 million on midnight showings alone, the film made a remarkable $155 million in domestic box office ticket sales. The only movies to beat that were "The Dark Knight" in 2008 with $158.4 million and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" in 2011 with $169.2 million. That means "Hunger Games" had the best domestic opening weekend for any non-sequel. Ever.
Tim Palen, president of marketing at Lionsgate, told The Hollywood Reporter, "It was the perfect storm. Having the first film in a franchise to be so gigantic is amazing. We had a great book and a great director in Gary Ross." However, the success was mostly limited to the States. Overseas, the film only made about $59.3 million, bringing the grand total up to $214.3 million. Still enough to beat the first "Twilight" film, and that's all that matters to some. Are you surprised by the mega-popularity and record-breaking box office numbers of "The Hunger Games"?

Plus it kicks Twilight's Ass
REALITY SCARED me enough! Humankind is drawn to the DARK SIDE. YOUNG people
ENJOY!
Come on people, these are just movies!!! Doom and gloomers are always trying to forecast movies as the what if, just like "Birth of a nation" and "red dawn". Besides, hunger games is a blatant rip off of the old Japanese movie "Battle Royale".
I came expecting a variety of comments on how the book neither the movie was good.
And looks at this......
I hate reading books..... and this thing won't change my opinions, but i'll give the movie one try
First, there were the books themselves - books that appealed to both young people and adults. . People got caught up in the books and it made them anticipate the movie all the more.
Anticipation - you can really bank on anticipation creating a successful opening weekend, however, how good the movie really is will determine how long it stays around.
Wide appeal - I mentioned that earlier. I am a woman just passing through middle age, and I thoroughly enjoyed the books, and I feel sure the young people who read them really enjoyed them.
Stagnant Hollywood season - Hollywood goes through very bad periods these days when they just can't seem to produce anything that appeals to the masses. They hit the right note at the right time with this one.
This movie is a futuristic movie - with possibilities. In other words, it is futuristic, but in this uncertain world in which we live, it is not implausible which makes it even more interesting.
