'How I Met Your Mother' Fans Speculate That the Mother Has Been Dead All Along: Agree or Disagree?

Fans of the beloved sitcom "How I Met Your Mother" are predicting that the series finale will be quite sad. Why? Because they are pretty sure the series will end with us finding out that the mother has been dead all along.

After nine seasons, fans feel pretty certain that they have gathered up enough clues to validate this theory.

Jezebel writes: "During the show's scenes that allegedly occur in the year 2030, the mother has never, not a once, been mentioned in the present tense. She also never appears in flash forwards of the gang of friends around which the show rotates; not even from the back. It seems like The Mother is simply not present in the future beyond the year 2024. And there's the fact that after the show's final table read, Alyson Hannigan Tweeted a picture of her script surrounded by used Kleenexes. Naturally, after almost 9 years, people get attached to jobs, to characters. But would a schmaltzy This Whole Thing Was About A Nice Lady Who Died Tragically turn have made the cryfests worse?

Last night's episode cemented in many viewers' and critics' minds The Mother's eventual sad fate. In the episode, which takes place in 2024 after the pair are already married, Ted tells The Mother a story about how Robin's mother showed up to Robin and Barney's wedding. The Mother remarked that of course a mother would want to be at her daughter's wedding. Ted bursts into tears, and The Mother (whose name viewers haven't yet learned) comforts him and tells him to stop living in his stories and move on with his life."

Jason Segel also reported to "GQ" a few years ago that he thought the mother might be dead (but back then he did not know the series outcome). What do you think Sodaheads? Do you agree with this top fan theory, or is it too obvious? Do you think the show creators want the finale to be more surprising, and are perhaps on purpose making it seem like she might be dead? Or, does the evidence outweigh this notion?

Hollywood doesn't have that much imagination.
Or the guts to end a sitcom that way.

Modern family, How I met your mother, The crazy ones and several other sitcoms suck, I watched them a couple times and they are ignorant to say the least. Person of Interest, NCIS both shows, Blue Bloods, The Mentalist I do enjoy, for the life of me I don't understand why Vegas was cut Dennis Quaid is a great actor much better than Patrick Harris by leaps and bounds.

to be honest i dont really know its a possibility but as for showing the mum in flash forwards they couldnt really do that because that would reveal something about the mother that wasnt meant to be revealed. the whole point of him telling the 9 year story of how he met the mother is meant to be a surprise for the audience but the children have already probably heard this story once or twice because lets face it who hasn't heard how their parents met, the kids seem a bit disinterested and if the mother had just died i would have expected them to want to hear about their mother more than ever just to grasp any type of contact with her but saying that we've all seen the episode how much have we really learnt about the mother most of the episodes have been about TED's escapades

I guess it's possible, but it never occurred to me. I don't think such a tragic note is appropriate to end a sitcom.

Is such a twist possible? Sure. Is it likely? Well, based on my vote, one would likely conclude I don't think so. And one would be right - i just don't see that kind of development as helping to make the show funny.

Seems like a logical thing to do after so long. I'm sure when it began the creator/writers had no idea it would last 9 years and probably never gave a thought to having to solve a big mystery.

It's what i have been suspecting, but i have hopes that after the final story to the kids, the mom will call them in for dinner.

Though all of the episodes that show ted with gray hair, she isn't around.

This makes more sense. The kids are annoyed because this is the umpteenth time they had to hear it; only each version keeps getting more elaborate with side stories..."oh wait, let me back up..."

especially when the more recent episodes are showing the parents in the future...talking about the past.

if the mother was dead...when they show the kids, they would be so "bored" by the stories..they would appear sad - or at the very least - interested in the stories.

I think the writers of this show spend a lot of time thumbing their noses at the audience, so it would be like them to have it be so. I kept watching this show thinking it was actually going to address the titular question, only to get yanked around. Gave up on it when I realized this was going to be one long drawn out affair, and just not that interesting.
