How did you become interested in anime and/or Japanese culture?

For example, it seems that most people first watch anime and then get interested in Japanese culture, language, and music. But I'm curious to see if anyone else got interested in these things in a different order.
I started with video games, then got interested in Japanese music, then the language, then anime, then culture.

Idk...I never liked anime until I started watching YuGiOh. I always seemed to like video games. Then I watched Mulan and loved how beautiful Asia was. I watched Teen Titans Trouble in Tokyo and thought it looked cool. Then I started playing Okami, which lead me to see how beautiful Japan is as well as China from Mulan, and Okami also showed me how beautiful Japan's music is. The language looks cool too with all the cool symbols, our letters are quite boring, I think. I think I'll learn their language for fun some day. I also think Japan is very unique the way it has those awesome gates :o

the king of video games MARIO! I loved the games and even tough the old ones are hard they were awesome and I'm a huge King Bowser fanboy also watching Zenki, Sailor Moon and DBZ!

one of my friends showed me AMV Hell 3 in like 8th grade and i was hooked. Mahou Sensei Negima! was my first addiction and is still one of the most special shows to me.
from there i started collecting sound tracks for animes and that led me to more music.

i think i saw a picture of inuyasha and kagome kissing, and being the romantic that i am i decided to check it out. loved it and have loved anime ever since. i´m not super into japanese culture, but enough to follow the anime stories.

I guess it kinda started with anime.....LONG STORY here goes.......One day at like 2 AM I was really bored so I was flicking through channels and caught Inuyasha on....at first I was like WTH is this and turned...but nothing was on so I turned back (I thought Inuyasha was a girl) i wasn't used to anime lol.....So when I heard him talk I was like is it a boy? But anyways after I watched the first episode the next day I was like "hmmm I wonder if that weird show is on" (it was) then as time went on I was like "hmmm is Inuyasha on"? then later it was OOOH Inuyasha is on....And THEN it was "OMG INUYASHA IS ON"!!!!!!!!! lolz so of course my first Japanese song was Shinjitsu no Uta and I Effing loved it so I downloaded it...then I heard Every Heart and learned that song then after that I learned many Japanese songs and started to learn Japanese all together (told you it was a long story) ha ha ha........Then came DBSK (complete accident) I was downloading a song (forget what song) but DBSK popped up (Korean song...hug I think) so I was like "hmmm whats this" so I listened and was like "WTF is this Gibberish" lolz so after that I was curious and LOVED their voices so I looked up DBSK (are you still listening lolz) And found out they sing Japanese songs too so I downloaded a bunch of ...

HA HA HA Crazy story I know but I am sooooooo glad I came across Inuyasha All because of him I got into Japanese &&&&& Korean & J-pop & K-pop & BLEACH & DBSK & BOA & Utada & Super Junior & Yui & Skip Beat & Aqua Timez &&&& OKAY YOU GET IT LOLZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sorry I got carried away :-)

I started with an interest in anime.

My mom & my friend Martin, got me started @ the same time. My mom started going thru a Japanese phase about a decade ago. Since then, she collected SO MANY Japanese items in the house that I call our home, "Lil' Asia"! My friend Martin, who owned a comic book store in my hometown was the 1 who reawakened my love for anime, about 10 - 15 years ago! I remember when we were having 1 of our "How come I don't see that many black people in anime?" talks. That's when he introduced me to Nadia from "The Blue Water" & Anthy from "Revolutionary Girl Utena". I was hooked & I started to see things differently about other cultures & races in anime. Sadly, Martin passed away about 4 years ago. I really miss him... as well as our talks.

Ok one word SONIC. I was a total Shadow fangirl after a while, but originally i just loved the games. HOURS OF ENTERTAINMENT. then i got into the show then eventually i reformed my love for anime, (because i never knew that was what it was then) Fma, Pokemon, Bleach, Yu-Gi-Oh, Sailor Moon, ext..

Well, I used to not have any interest in Japanese stuff at all. I was oblivious to it. Then I met these Japanese-American siblings and we became friends. They introduced me to Japanese stuff; culture came first, then anime, then language, then video games. Recently, I've started listening to some Japanese music.

my father was airforce during Korean War and always brought home beautiful gifts from all over Asia and I fell in love with the beauty of everything that seemed to come from there and so it continues..... 45 years of Japanese influence and oooops seemed to have passed it on to a few of my daughters ... must be in the blood....

i love anime too my children like it too. Here in Canada there some shows of it, not like Japanese T.v. Show. Its hard to find places that i can find sites on the Internet that i can watch? Or look at Books. My Dauther love anime too she is a good Art would like to know where she can find thing that she can draw picture of them?

if she has a draw pad or uses a computer program for her art tell her to join deviant art on line there is alot of people there who create, share, rate and even sell their work.

it started with games (i think) then it went to anime, then the language!!! the games i have liked for awhile now and the anime it started when i got satellite but i have always liked pokemon since i was 6, so don't know really and i would really like to learn japanese langauge but i doubt that will happen!!! and their culture and music after that i have liked so!!! :D

WAHHH DON'T SAY THAT!!!!! (you doubt that will happen) WIth that mind frame it won't......seriously you have to stay motivated & keep it fun and fresh....don't think of it as hard or homework think of it as like learning a new word you don't know (not so hard right?) There are a lot of japanese learning games....that helps a bunch!!! Stay motivated:-)

I use to have a sega mega drive 2 and a nitendo,... so i guess my interest developed while i was just a kid,.. Since i spent my childhood in Serbia and my mom is from Germany i grew up watching cable tv because my mom wanted me to learn the language she use to speak,... I was 3 or 4 then and i loved to watch Sailor Moon, all the anime i use to watch as a kid were dubbed in german (inuyasha, detective conan),.. When i was in high school i use to find inspiration for my drawings in anime and in Japanese culture (i finished fashion design). I love Japanese designers :3

It all started with video games. Then I got into Sailor Moon and Poke'mon. The more I got into anime the more I got into the culture, the music, and the language. :3 Now I plan on moving there after I get my bachelor's degree. I want to get my master's in animation over there :D

I started with Japanese fashion. I once saw a little cartoon girl on a world-toy-thing and she was wearing a kimono and I found it very long flowing and pretty.

I first got a hint at what Japanese music, culture, and language was like while playing with that toy-globe thing. It played music and I liked how it seemed peaceful, I also liked counting to 5 in japanese with it and it taught me simple words like "konnichiwa". It was a fun toy. :D

But here's how it really went:
1. Video games since I was 4 or 3 years old.(I played Mario and stuff, but didn't know it was from Japan).
2. Anime when I was 4 - 9 years old (I watched Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Digimon, etc. and didn't know it was from Japan or called anime until I was 11 or 12.)
3. Fashion
4. Music (I love the sound of shamisen but didn't know that's what the instrument was called when I was younger)
5. Language (got into this after watching subtitled anime online) :D
6. Culture

Now I absolutely love Japan and that started off with a spark from playing with a globe-toy thing. >w<

I used to watch Speed Racer and My Neighbor Totoro like they where going out of style when I was really little, not even knowing they were anime! XD Then the video games rolled in because my mother got me into them!
I was quite the Japanese lover when I was young without even realizing.

my friend introduced me to anime and after that, i was hooked. she's become my "sensei" (^o^)

I honestly couldn't tell you. I use to play video games as a kid, but didn't think much of where they came/originated from, and I was also obsessed with Sailor Moon when I was about 8 and later on watched shows like DBZ and Pokemon but at the time I didn't even know what anime was.

When I was about 15 I started to watch Inuyasha with my sister, and than, my entire fascination begin. I know want to learn the language, and I love the music.
