I think it's because Babe Ruth always called out left field, and strategically that is the worst place to put the ball.

because Ted Williams played it. :-]
It is really because left handed ball players were a novelty early in baseball, they had a reputation for being eccentric and therefore they came from left field.

Not sure. Since fewer balls go to right field and that's where little leaguers put the weakest fielder, you'd think it would be "out in right field."

I know it seems to be a place where a lot of balls are not caught. I just got finished telling somebody they were hanging out there missing ball after ball.

"Teddy Ballgame" was amazing. My Dad said he was the best hitter he ever saw and he was probably in the majority. Ted's the reason Robert Redford wore #9 in "The Natural." I know how you feel about getting that autograph. I got Sandy Koufax's the year after he retired when he was working for NBC. Best pitcher I ever saw. If he wouldn't have hurt his arm before he learned how to pace himself, it's hard to image the career he would have had.
