How can 204 countries compete in the Olympics, but only 196 countries exist?

Finally watching the opening ceremonies, and they mentioned that every country was included, and they mentioned the number as "over 200". I looked it up, and it said it was 204 competing countries. A link brought me to a site that mentioned there are a fluctuating number at any one time, but the most believed to exist right now is 196. How is that possible?

Just Guessing ...maybe two Countries are Split...North and South? or perhaps it's the 'Republics' or such that are from one country. Good Question though...worthy of a little mission. \m/
