It's official. There is no stopping Minecraft. Some time overnight, the indie gaming phenomenon passed 10 million downloads. That figure doesn't include the units bought and played on Xbox 360.

Minecraft has only been available as a full-version download since November 2011. Since then, the brainchild of Swedish programmer Marcus "Notch" Persson has becoming one of gaming's most remarkable stories. At $26.95 a copy, and given that Persson largely bootstrapped the development, the success has no doubt made him a remarkably wealthy person.

They're BOTH for kids...believe me I have kids... Boy are they into Steam and Minecraft. And terraria...

It's fantastic, but I don't have time for it. Maybe when I was young and had nothin' to do for hours at a time...

FYI, I don't play any of these games. I tried them though and I can tell which one is more complex and mature and which one is simple and juvenile.

It's funny grown ups are into My Little Pony and kids are into COD.

Here's a revelation I had recently: My kid was playing Star Wars Rebel Strike with me dogfighting a few years back. He was 6. He very quickly got really good at it and could beat me. It made me realize that all of these games are nothing a 6 year old couldn't master. I had gained nothing in those 30 or so extra years that could help me beat my 6 year old. There must be some treachery I picked up to use to my advantage...

Where's the game you have to be an adult to master?

There is no game you need to be an adult to master...However the difference between a 6 years old and an adult playing mincraft could look like this:

Here is what a 6 y/o's typical construction will look like:
    mincraft ugly house

Here is what an adult playing this game can do:
    minecraft city

I'm not saying it is time well spent at all...But clearly there is a difference in the way a kid and an adult will play the game and creativity and complex mental imagery processing (which is still developping until we are about 15-16) makes a difference.

If you're describing your kids as "kiddies" I'm going to assume they are too young to play Minecraft.

That game has the least amount of violence than all the other games. Its especially for the kiddies. I got four from 14 to 3. They all love it. Can't see the pic for some reason.

Older kids and teens I can see playing this game. But they're zombies and skeletons and giant spiders that might scare little kids. Also, on multiplayer many times players can use strong language. Just a word of caution. :)

I don't count it as real Minecraft. I want the full experience. If you want to see some good Let's Plays of Minecraft, CaptainSparklez has one, and Naka Teleeli has one. TBone105 uses mods in his LP's, those are the BallerCraft Series. All are great. CaptainSparklez also did Skyblock. It was awesome....

Mario was a creation of one man's whimsy. Mario was not the end goal, he was a character created around the role that he filled, which could have been filled by nothing memorable. Mario has a kind of charm that can only originate in whimsy

Sonic was created in an internal Sega design contest. The goal was to create a mascot character like Mario. The end result seemed a little fake, trying a little too hard, but it still had an element of whimsy. The games were unique and built around the traits of the character. You couldn't put Sonic in a Mario game and not have it suck, or vice-versa.

Crash Bandicoot reeks of focus groups and marketing departments. He is a product of the mid 90s EXTREME DO THE DEW! period of product marketing, and it shows. The character was clearly an effort to give Sony a Mario/Sonic, and the game (not horrible, but utterly unremarkable) was secondary to that. You could put any character in a Crash Bandicoot game, and you'd never know the difference.

And look at what you put him next to.
