Have you heard any cover songs that are better than the original?

pepper5419 2012/06/10 03:17:41
I love watching music videos on YouTube in my spare time.I have a large variety of music I listen to so my favorites list is all over the place.I have favorites in country music, rock and roll, doo wop, motown, some rap.and top 40.You come across some videos of people or bands that sing cover songs better than the original artists. Some of the better examples over the years would be "Me and Bobby McGee" original artist Kris Kristofferson sung better by Janis Joplin,"Just My Imagination "original artist The Temptations sung better by the Rolling Stones,etc...Another example would be an obscure cover band. One of my favorites is the Diesel Island band w/ Steve Chosich singing "You Never Even Called Me By My Name."It's the best version of a song originally sung by David Allan Coe.Got any favorites?
You!

I actually like most of the original versions better. You cant beat Whitney Houston and I will always love you. Or maybe you can but I tend to listen to the nostalgic sounds of old favorites.

Maybe 80 to 100 in all genres. I have, just a second, 2668 in my most poplar iTunes, it's split over three drives so the time doesn't show anything sensible anymore, and 13,579 total songs. So "in my opinion" a cover is seldom better than the original, less than 1%.

I liked Marilyn Manson's version of Sweet dreams are made of this. And Axel rose did justice to Sweet Child of mine. And YES! Janis' version of Bobby Mcgee became the first one people think of when they hear the name... She wasn't real pretty, but the woman could sing!!! She had a LOT of energy you know???

I may take some heat for this, but I like Metallica's version of "Whiskey in the Jar" better than the original- and I'm taking NOTHING from Thin Lizzy!

Marilyn Mansons cover of Sweet Dreams, originally by Anne Lennox. Van Halens cover of the Kinks song You Really Got Me, according to Kinks band member Dave Davies, I do love Eddies solo at the start of the song.

Some covers are great. Some are worthless and pointless, for example, Tesla doing "Signs". When I first heard it I thought it was the original, it's that close. Trent Reznor said he had no idea Cash was going to cover "Hurt", but after hearing it, said something along the lines of "It's his song now". I agree completely. Then there are songs like "Sweet Dreams" that to me, Manson's cover of it is how it SHOULD have been done.

A couple by Grand Funk Railroad that for me surpass the original versions:
