Have you ever wondered why people who TALK with a foreign accent SING (in English) with an American accent?

KrYsTaL 2009/04/18 01:55:43
Yeah, that's kinda weird, huh?
Nopes, never crossed my mind...
I don't care, just keep on singin'!
You!

A few examples: Englishmen--even with a Cockney accent--or Australians like Keith Urban, who sings like he's from Tennessee--how do they do that?

Same with Ville Valo of HIM. But sometimes you can hear his accent, and his Finnish accent is adorable.

Although, there are a few who manage to get their accent to come through while singing. I hate them, but the guy from Oasis sounds pretty British while he's whining.

Yeah! Some people are giving the Beatles as an example of British singers with accents when they're singing. Another is Lily Allen. So weird!

When the Beatles or Rolling Stones sang, I noticed their British accent. When the Who or Led Zepplin sang, I didn't notice their British accent. Celine Dion is from French Quebec, she speaks with a thick French accent, when she sings, no accent. Ricky Martin speaks English with a slight noticeable Puerto Rican accent when he sings in English without one. Enrique Iglesias speaks English with a slight noticeable Spanish accent but sings in English without one. His father Julio Iglesias speaks English with a thick Spanish accent and sings in English with a thick Spanish accent too.

Trained singers can change their accents. To be honest I rarely noticed. The Beatles for instance always had a British accent when they sang as a group. When John Lennon and Ringo Starr sang solo they did not sing with a British accent. It also depends on the music style. Many famous singers of bands shout alot. You don't hear an accent. Creedance Clearwater were from San Francisco, CA. They sang all songs associated with Southern backwoods country. They used a slight Southern accent when they sang these songs. Singers can put this on. Take actress Merryl Streep, a great actress who studied many different accents for different movie roles.

VERY weird, but actors do it all the time - the redheaded guy on Grey's Anatomy (he's scots), or House, or the guy on Life. Whatever....

Not all of them do that, mate.

How do they do it, you mean the ones that do? Easy, it's always easier to fake an accent while singing than while speaking.

lol, I like them in both languages, but I listen to them in german more because I'm trying to learn the language. But I first heard them when I downloaded MONSOON on my ps3 so I could play it on rockband, and I didn't know anything about them, and I had never heard of them, so I went and bought the CD a week later, and then started looking them up online. I thought they were a new band, and I was really surprised at how successful they are in other countries, lol, I felt left out XD This all happend in May 2008. I can't wait for their new CD.

But most of the time, after I find out they're not American, I start to hear the subtle differences in the way they pronounce English words. Like Bill in Tokio Hotel. Every time he makes the "a" sound as in the word "bad" it comes out sounding like "e" like in "bed".
