Usually the book IS better. Few people argue that. But is it
possible to make a better movie? If so does that mean the book was bad but
contained a the kernel of a good idea for a movie? Or maybe. The book was good,
but someone took it to the next level in a film. Which is it. And if you HAVE
seen a movie that did it better, please specify which one.

I think the time gap between the writing and the movie played into the movie's hands on this one. The rather spartan and dated (by today's standards) technology of the books was kind of lacking compared with the movies

That's true-- it WAS pretty unremarkable by today's standards, but I also thought the linear timeline played out much better onscreen than in print. More like a ride than a narrative, if that makes sense. Prolly not true of the origianl Bourne Identity with Richard Chamberlain.

Good point. I never saw the one with Chamberlain, but I did not too long ago pick up one of his novels I hadn't read before and found that I just could not get into the story in the way I would have if I had read it at the time I read the Bourne Identity... just too dated

True--- and Sax Roehmer (Fu Manchu) comes to mind in this way, as well-- when those series were written, the police call-boxes were a huge deal, and played a big role in the action. Same thing with air travel and personal mobility in general. Such a lag in technology really does jar one out of the story. :O)

Its difficult sometimes to realize just how much things have changed in my lifetime. Its odd, but i only seem to have this disconnect with stories that are within that time frame, I can read a historical novel of a time well before my own and not have the same sort of negative feelings.

Thanks for the chat tonight Sockpuppet, its been a pleasure but I've got to get some sleep or I'll be worthless tomorrow

The original Star Wars. The movie vastly exceeded what the book delivered

Very true! I remember what an experience it was, watching a relatively simple plot line play out in such in such an amazing style. Overwhelming, even.

Excellent description Sockpuppet. I read the book in the back of the station-wagon on a family cross country trek, enjoyed it enough to be anxious to see the movie when we arrived on the West coast but was completely unprepared for such an epic movie experience

Not sure if it counts as a "book" but I though Watchmen was actually a little bit better movie. I DID love the graphic novel, but I thought the slightly different ending in the movie was a bit more "neat" (i.e. who the public believed to be the threat at the end) than in the graphic novel. It was a slight difference, achieved the same goal, and actually made a little more sense.
