  American Idol is a mainstream show which panders to the ratings, and ultimately feeds to the maw of Big Business. So anyone who performs is really letting the side down. An Idol failure is a counter-culture success. It's the big winners on Idol who are the biggest trators to the cause of live, rather than manufactured, music.

  I mainly voted yes because I have never liked Fantasia. If she has fallen, it doesn't surprise me, nor was it much of a 'fall' anyway...I never thought she had any talent and it is beyond me that she has made it as far as she has. In fact, in the entire history of the show, I can really only think of one or maybe two people that have any considerable talent and 'Idolizability' if such a word exists and they are Kelly Clarkson and possibly Carrie Underwood (though I'm not really much of a fan of country, but I can recognize her ability). I think Adam Lambert has some showmanship but I can't honestly say I would want to idolize him. Sure I cheered on a couple of other contestants before I stopped watching the program altogether, but their releases after winning or coming close were absolute total failures. I can't even actually remember most of the winners because they were THAT forgettable. Admittedly, some contestants had great voices, but all in all the show is for television entertainment purposes marketed towards teens who like to vote for "who is the cutest" or "who has a really great personality" and has strayed far away from finding any remarkable and/or memorable talent.

  Who cares? American Idol may have some merit or value that I don't always see but this show is becoming boring with all the extraneous weekly shenanigans and poor talent. At least Ed Sullivan and Johnny Carson could bring new talent to the forefront of their audience demographics!

  This should not be "news." I wish Fantasia well. American Idol much like other "reality" programs takes people out of their simple lives and thrusts them into a limelight they are ill prepared to handle. I feel sorry for them. This seems to be common with these types of celebrities and with many professional athletes too.

  All of these clowns are 'manufactured stars.' They have nice singing voices, but no real uniqueness. That's why they're getting high waiting for someone to write songs for them. And they suck....like most of the pop music coming out right now. This new mess doesn't surprise me. We have 'stars' today that are more famous for their trials and tribulations than for their real achievements in the arts (like the Kardashian gold-diggers, for example)......

  Seriously, people...aren't we getting a bit worked up over a train wreck of a show that jumped the shark a while ago? Few of the contestants have managed to eke out a successful pop career. Most have dropped into complete & utter obscurity. I think Justin Guarini took my order at Burger King last week. Many have already had to whore themselves out to reality shows. Look at Nikki McKibbin, for example. Girl had a great voice & was smokin' hot, and last I saw she was a bloated washed up coke fiend on some cheap rehab show.

  Fantasia, Justin Guarini, Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken, Taylor Hicks, Katharine McPhee, Jordin Sparks, Carly Smithson's CD all disappointed me and I guess so did everyone else. Many of these artist lost their label contracts because of poor sales. The whole point of the show was to give a platform for finding talent BUT they also have to make the label make some money. I think they should limit the number of phone calls, because these artist are being chosen by teens who are voting for the cutest boy or girl and not basing them on talent. The viewers of the show are not buying what these artist are selling when they release their CD's. The viewership of the show is not being translated into CD sales. I stopped watching the show in 2006. It lost the purpose of the show for me.
  
  Personally, I never cared for Fantasia, she screamed too much instead of singing. I have like LaToya London that season in the Battle of the Divas.

  Yes, I did like Bo and he even said he didn't want pop rock fame, he just wanted to make a small living doing what he loved. I thought the same thing about Chris Daugherty, he didn't really want to win the top prize he only wanted to get his name out there for a label to hear him and sign him. He had so many doors shut in his face and as the last resort, he did idol and it worked for him and I still love him. David Cook puzzled me. Rockers usually don't like a label telling them what to do. What idol is about is popdom/stardom, here one day gone the next. Hard core rockers wouldn't be caught dead on that show or only used it to get their name out there the way Bo and Chris did.

Yeah, crazily enough rockers wind up being more "popular" than actual "pop stars" so you'd THINK they'd have a version of Rock Idol, eh? Yeah Idols are here today gone the next. But now an Artist?   I take pride in the fact that I never watched a complete show - ever. I grew up on 'real entertainers on TV' like Dean Martin, Jonathan Winters, Sammy Davis Jr., Carol Burnett, Flip Wilson, and showmen like Ed Sullivan who never would've stocked his great show with these flash-in-the-pan 'Idols.' It's not a wonder no one ever bought their cd's. These brats have no real talent or something musically different to say. They're just one-season wonders, and no personality, to boot.
