'Harry Potter' Jokes Cause Emma Watson to Leave Brown University: Harmless Teasing or Bullying?

Emma Watson whizzed through Hogwarts, but Brown University proved to be a bit too much for her.

According to The New York Daily News, Watson had no problem speaking up in class and passing tests, but the "Harry Potter" star had a hard time fitting in.

A source close to Brown University says Watson is "really smart" and would "answer something in class and get it right."

But her Ivy League classmates "would respond [to her answer] with a quote from 'Harry Potter,'" saying things like "Three points for Gryffindor!"

However, Watson later told The Associated Press that she loved her time at Brown, and was just too stressed about having to go to school and work on films at the same time, and all the time on planes in between.

"Flying backwards and forwards was just turning out to be crazy, and nuts, and a bit of a nightmare," she explained.

Do you think Watson was bullied out of Brown?

I think it's fairly clear that she left Brown because of her work as an actress. She even says it herself: "Flying backwards and forwards was just turning out to be crazy, and nuts, and a bit of a nightmare."

    "Three points for Gryffindor !"

Absolutely hilarious ! Bullying ? I can't really see it. However, I can't see either how being an iconic megastar would ever really 'fit in' in the sense that, you're not just going to be able to 'merge with the background' if you want a bit of piece and quiet.

Now that would make life difficult for many, but for Emma, surely not unbearable. Bullied out of Brown ? We can't really tell, but the evidence suggests not.

She's very intelligent and I'm certain she was aware these sorts of things would await her.

I imagine she's the type that can simply enjoy it and move on. It gets old after a while, but she understands that she will be "Hermione Granger" for a long time because it was such a dedicated role.

A role she should be (and most certainly is) proud of.

The jokes they come up with are probably funny but they must of went to far to cause her to LEAVE Brown. She wants to go to a normal university to make something extra out of her life but it seems she'll probably never escape from harry potter and it's sad that people won't leave her alone.

I think I might laugh at the jokes if I were in her position. Sure, it would probably get old, but I don't think someone with a professional attitude about her career would expect any less from people. After all, she is "Hermione Granger" to most of us.

If she said she left for work reasons, I would believe that much more readily than someone else suggesting she was hurt by some offhand comments from students at a prestigious university.

I don't think someone of Emma's status would let some immature kids get to her enough to ruin her dream of attending college...I'm sure she was too busy with work to attend at this moment.

She doesn't seem like the type to let goofy things like that phase her. Harry Potter will always be a part of her life and I'm sure she can handle what comes with that.

At $55,000 per year (COA) - I'd expect more from a University - she does need to get a thicker skin - students can be jerks anywhere - being at an Ivy doesn't protect you from idiots.

Sure, if you're the type to take everything personally. My boyfriend and I tease each other all the time, and neither one of us means any harm. Some people, when they make a joke at your expense, aren't laughing at you - they're laughing because they made a joke.

What ? Rape is similar to Teasing ? Don't get it.

Rape = terrible act of violence, overpowerment [does that word even exist?] and intrusion

Teasing = Name calling or suggestion that somebody likes somebody when it may or not be true ?

I mean, sorry to just barge in on your comment, but if there is any difference by degrees, there seem to be a whole lot of degrees between rape and teasing to me. A whole lot.

The operative phrase is ".... don't take it personally."

You can never know how emotionally fragile any individual is at any moment and your "teasing" comment may push them to extinguishing their life or your's. I would never take that kind of gamble.

I doubt she is so humorless as to be unable to distinguish between a playful comment and a terrible act of violence.

    Then why did she leave?
  • the which Tau_Seti 2011/04/26 16:37:22 (edited)
    the which
She could have left for the reasons she stated; the demands of being a professional actress AND a student at a very prestigious university could have made her feel like she was constantly against a wall... I know I would be feeling the pressure in her situation.

If she left due to teasing, it wasn't because she mistook it for rape. She seems to be more intelligent than that.

"Teasing" is a form of "rape", using someone for your amusement.
  • the which Tau_Seti 2011/04/26 16:55:06
    the which
No. Just, no. Rape is the act of forcing oneself onto another sexually. In no way is someone who makes a lighthearted comment trying to defile you or force you to do anything. Teasing is verbal, rape is physical. I am not saying that teasing cannot be harmful - I know it can - but my point is that not all teasing is meant to harm. Rape, on the other hand, is always harmful.

"Consideration" of what exactly, your presumption on why she left or that everyone uses the same definition of terms and how they apply to their lives?
