Gwyneth Paltrow Tweets the N-Word: Insensitive or Overreaction?

Gwyneth Paltrow found herself in the middle of a media storm on Monday when she tweeted a photo of herself standing next to Jay-Z and Beyonce with the caption "Ni**as in paris for real." She was, of course, referencing a song by Jay-Z and Kanye West, but the media immediately jumped on it. Watch the video below for more.

Some were obviously offended by Paltrow's use of the word, stating that people who are not African American should never, under any circumstances, use it. Others argued that Jay-Z and Kanye are to blame for including the word in the name of the song. Still others felt that her use of the word was harmless. It's an intricate issue, and Gwyneth Paltrow's tweet sits in a complicated spot. Do you think it was insensitive -- or an overreaction?

its not that serious, people can it with the race crap. she was not being racist, only small-minded people want to throw up the race card on something as small as a caption of a photo. btw, dont just see the big picture, see the more important but smaller pieces that make it up. its not the word itself, its the principle of reference. she was refering to herself as a n***a too because she was included in the photo. in her eyes, n***a doesnt mean black, it means friends.

Um; Black people are not drones, some will use it and others won't. Your comment isn't bright if you can't fathom individuals have different opinions on the word.

Well Jay-Z and Kanye West shouldn't have come out with the song in the first place. Now people believe the word is less offensive, which is ignorant on their part. I honestly don't believe caucasians should say it, because then it's too controversial, and causes problems like this. I'm not trying to be racist, but it's a black peoples' only word in today's society.

If the Dream claims he posted it from Paltrow's phone, well, they put this on themselves even more so. God help today's rappers.

**edit: I'm sure someone's going to reply and yell at me... Reread the first sentence of my comment before yelling at me... Maybe that'll make some difference.

They wouldn't have given the song that title if they didn't want to hear anyone quote it. It was a natural joking thing to say.

"It's the suppression of the word that gives it the power, the violence, the viciousness... if President Kennedy would just go on television, and say, "I would like to introduce you to all the ni**ers in my cabinet," and if he'd just say "ni**er ni**er ni**er ni**er ni**er"... 'til ni**er didn't mean anything anymore, then you could never make some six-year-old black kid cry because somebody called him a ni**er at school." - Lenny Bruce

There's far too much fuss made about the word n*gger. It's not even swearing, for God's sake! I would much rather she said that word than start saying f-ing this, f-ing that, like a lot of people do. I only found out that n*gger was considered offensive when I was about 16, and I know plenty of decent people who use the word on a daily basis. People need to stop being so easily offended.

I think people are over reacting, I doubt very much Gwyneth is a racist. However I think it's a horrible word and should not be said by anyone.

LMAO @ Ghetto Pass. It's a slang term, not for just one race to use. People who claim words are owned by any one race are racist themselves. Thanks for proving that point.

Sorry to break this to you, but this "slang term" comes from where? Oh, yeah... the ghetto. You go into said ghetto and think you can use it anyway you want to as a white person, and you should prepare to be called on it. That's just the truth of the situation.

Don't turn on me please. I had a black neighbor who was drunk one Sunday and he came to my door and started using racial epithets at me so I know first hand the hatred some blacks hold toward whites. I also heard another neighbor, while talking with me, call this same man a n**ger which was equally wrong.

"And somehow it's okay for the black man to be racist. How does that work?!" I don't know how I'm supposed to react to a question like that when I said there were racists in all colors. Why would it be OK for a black to be racist?

I'm agreeing with you. I know full well the double standards in American racism. Why else could blacks get away with their hatred of Asians who came to this country from their deplorable conditions and made successes of themselves when the blacks had the chance to better themselves but did not? This is not all black people but I'm referring to those on the government dole who claim entitlement for past treatment.

Yes, and the US government played a big role by making it unnecessary for the males to stay in the home since welfare checks were coming into the homes.
