Gwyneth Paltrow Tweets the N-Word: Insensitive or Overreaction?

Gwyneth Paltrow found herself in the middle of a media storm on Monday when she tweeted a photo of herself standing next to Jay-Z and Beyonce with the caption "Ni**as in paris for real." She was, of course, referencing a song by Jay-Z and Kanye West, but the media immediately jumped on it. Watch the video below for more.

Some were obviously offended by Paltrow's use of the word, stating that people who are not African American should never, under any circumstances, use it. Others argued that Jay-Z and Kanye are to blame for including the word in the name of the song. Still others felt that her use of the word was harmless. It's an intricate issue, and Gwyneth Paltrow's tweet sits in a complicated spot. Do you think it was insensitive -- or an overreaction?

You claim to be a college graduate, also that your ethnicity is : other. You are awfully quick to judge a book by the cover & insult Gwenyth by calling her a dumb bitch. The Universe has a wonderful way of putting a mirror in front of you and shining a bright light on YOU. While trying to paint the picture of Gwenyth as a stereotypical stupid blonde, you succeeded in effectively demonstrating who the REALLY STUPID, DUMB BITCH is. Congratulations !!! Have a nice day.

you have no clue about her - just because she plays innocent in movies does not make her a Saint she is an over- privileged Caucasian who will always get away with her short comings and any trouble will be swept under the rug because she is wealthy. you have completely demonstrated what a stupid bigot is

It's okay for Gwyneth to use the "N" word, since she's a liberal. Liberals are given a free pass on all hypocrisy and even though they are supposedly against racism, they can make all the racist comments they like without penalty.

It's not offensive when they say it because they're reclaiming the term and taking away its power. It's offensive when we use it because we never used it in a positive manner, historically.

She might have also been using it to mean "friend", since she was with two of her friends, but I see your point.
It seems to me like people are more concerned with racist words than with actual racism... maybe it's just easier to point out?

That's because people have seemed to have forgotten meaning of the words "racism". Over every little thing, and not just minorities. Like when that white man (I know that sounds rude, but I forgot his name lol) called Jay-Z a racist for changing his team's colors to black and white. That was ridiculous. But when it is really racism there's no shame in pointing it out. If she did use the word to mean "friends" then it's alright but it would be less stressful for caucasians to not use it because it creates too much controversy...yeah, I know it's unfair but that's life. But really everyone should just stop saying it.

Well, she wasn't lying, lol. It's the name of the song, and it was actually witty. It probably would have been better if she just didn't say anything, and it was an awkward comment, but she didn't mean any offense. Jay-Z, Beyonce, Gwyneth, and Chris are all really good friends. I'm sure she thought it was okay.

If you don't want it used, don't put the word in the title of the song. Similarly, it shouldn't be used by ANYONE, regardless of race. For over 400 years, that word has been used to demean Africans and their descendants and make them appear as sub-human if not little less that chattel. Any deviations from it or slight alterations, in my opinion, don't give power to an otherwise insulting word, but just acts as a catalyst to be used by everyone, who forgets the horrific history that came from its predecessor. Okay, sorry the rant is over.

It's the name of the song. Sometime the media go to far. Some celebrates need to stand there ground and not apologize for things they did nothing wrong for.
