Gwyneth Paltrow Tweets the N-Word: Insensitive or Overreaction?

Gwyneth Paltrow found herself in the middle of a media storm on Monday when she tweeted a photo of herself standing next to Jay-Z and Beyonce with the caption "Ni**as in paris for real." She was, of course, referencing a song by Jay-Z and Kanye West, but the media immediately jumped on it. Watch the video below for more.

Some were obviously offended by Paltrow's use of the word, stating that people who are not African American should never, under any circumstances, use it. Others argued that Jay-Z and Kanye are to blame for including the word in the name of the song. Still others felt that her use of the word was harmless. It's an intricate issue, and Gwyneth Paltrow's tweet sits in a complicated spot. Do you think it was insensitive -- or an overreaction?

If it's the name of the song, I think the song writer and artist is the one who is insensitive. She only stated what the song was.

Insensitive and she should have known better, there are words that i cant use when describing some one even though i have heard people use it directed at others who also use it. Example of one word is Bitch, i have heard women call their female friends Bitch, but i would never use that word when talking to a female, its not right and i dont care if she uses it to call another woman it.

But i tell you what, for all you white people who feel they can use the word, go ahead use it, use it all you want, but dont be surprised when you get a mud hole stomped in your behind.

any indecent language just shows the education level of the person. As long as I don't lover myself to their level I am fine. You seem to be smart, so don't even hang with folks that use that kind of language.

If the word is such an insult and disrespectful, then it shouldn't be used at all. Using it in the title of a song would suggest that the artist wants the word noticed. How better way to notice it . . .than by "tweeting." People need to calm down and quit being so sensitive. Seriously. . .The ghettos contain people of all skin colors. . . whether they want to acknowledge it or not. The word is ghetto. Ghetto isn't "Black" specific. One sure way is for everyone to stop using it. It isn't cool and it does sound ghetto. So rise above it and don't use it. No one group can claim they own a "word." I'm laughing as I typed that. It's ridiculous. . .

How can anyone pay attention to the greedy media who make mountains out of molehills. When are we getting over these divisions and becoming real when it comes to names and insults. The U.K seems to have made better progress then us. But the newsrags jump on any mistake.

IF you didn't want someone to say the word....you shouldn't have made it the title of a song. Double standards strike again! The one hit wonder word that only one group of people are allowed to use somehow. End case, no further interest here.

So she was humorously referencing song lyrics by a black artist. Let me get this straight, there's an unwritten rule stating that black people can use the n-word (or any variants of it) as they see fit, but the second a white person uses it, even as a paraphrase or quotation of something a black person said, they are suddenly reviled and blasted for perpetuating stereotypes or being ignorant? That's actually a fairly racist double-standard in itself. "YOU CAN'T USE THAT WORD, THAT'S OUR WORD". Seriously, whoever came up with that should have been slapped. And if you want my opinion, so should anyone who maintains that concept. If you find the likes of Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, George Carlin, or Bill Cosby, Gabriel Iglesias, or even Carlos Mencia to be funny, but this upsets you, then it's time to re-check your standards and lighten the hell up.

Because even if I were to say it in a joking or endearing way it could be taken offensively, it also isn't necessary to use; I just wouldn't want someone to hear it and think poorly of me or, even worse, be offended by the word because it is an insulting slur.

The 'ghetto slang' is not for her to use....it doesn't suit her. The music artists should not have used the word either....we really need to bury this word! Why should we 'black americans' get offended when someone other than 'us' use the n-word, if we ourselves use it in a derogertory term? Don't like the double standard...we need to get above this.

Who cares? The politically correctness in this country has risen to a ridiculous level. You can't tell a joke or say anything without some thin-skinned crybaby crying about the terrible words you used. People need to get a life and focus on something that actually matters.

It is an overreaction, but I seem to remember Dr. Laura being forced off the air because she used the term when discussing hypersensitivity to it with a black caller.
