Green Day Attends Gay Prom: Time To End Gay Discrimination?

To be honest with you, I don’t remember anything about my senior prom. Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

I’m sure it would’ve been fun, if I had been conscious throughout the whole thing. As it is, all I remember is the cottonmouthed, head-pounding unpleasantness that marred my subsequent 48 hours of existence.

But based on everything I’ve heard from my peers, and everything I’ve seen on ‘Saved By The Bell,’ it’s supposed to be some sort of magical, timeless rite of passage--a mile-marker perched somewhere between your first kiss and marriage.

I've also made clear in the past few weeks that I'm no real fan of Green Day, either. In fact, my relationship with Green Day is a lot like my relationship to my own high school prom, aside from the obvious fact that listening to Green Day, as far as I know, has never resulted in any serious loss in cognitive ability.

Both are just kinda there. They both exist on a dusty shelf in the library of my youth, but their pages are largely blank, except for a few lewd drawings in the margins.

My ambivalence toward Green Day, however, may have just radically shifted, ironically enough, because of their involvement in a high school prom.

This week, AllHeadlineNews reported that Green Day, Lance Bass and chef Cat Cora had all signed on to host what's being called a "gay-friendly" prom in the historically "gay non-friendly" state of Mississippi.

Organized by the American Humanist Association, the prom originated in response to a school's decision to ban one female student from attending her prom because she planned on bringing another girl as her date (the horror!). For no apparent reason, the school decided to cancel its official prom, but allowed parents host a separate, unofficial prom, to which the student, Constance McMillen, was not invited.

The so-called 'Second Chance Prom' is now entering its second year of fabulousness, and, as before, it's open to everyone: gay, straight, bisexual--even Green Day.

Now, it's obvious why Lance Bass would choose to participate, given the fact that he's, y'know, gay. Cora is also a lesbian, and she's from Mississippi. Double scoop.

Green Day's motivation behind getting involved, though, is a little bit harder to discern, aside from the fact that they all wear more eyeliner than Amy Winehouse.

But that's exactly why I think it's kinda awesome. I would much rather see them make a political or social point in this way than by releasing something as gastrically hideous as 'American Idiot.' They're not taking generic, guitar-addled swipes at the government on a CD. They're not putting out some Potemkin Village of a socially conscious album.

Instead, they've decided just to show up. That's all they had to do, really. Show up, maybe perform a bit, and maybe sign some autographs. By the end of the day, they'll have made their position perfectly clear, and they'll have successfully sided with a cause that, in its most fundamental form, is virtually unassailable. Not even the Grinch would have the heartlessness necessary to keep a high school kid from going to his or her prom--and especially not because of their sexual orientation.

This is letting a political message flow like water, instead of spraying it with a power hose. This is Taoist social consciousness, as opposed to maudlin passion.

Quite simply, this is nonchalant activism at its all-time best.

I definitely won't be getting a second chance to go to a prom. Nor will I necessarily give Green Day's music a second chance because of their decision to participate.

But I know that a lot of kids like their songs, and I also know that a lot of kids like going to prom. In seizing the opportunity to just simply show up, Green Day has not only given a few kids the prom they deserve, but they've also managed to speak volumes without even lifting a microphone.
You!

I didn't know about that, so that's really cool. Good for Green Day, and that's awesome news for the girl and other people who are gay/lesbian/bisexual. Also, the lead singer is bisexual, so maybe that had something to do with it?

LOL @ "they wear more eyeliner than Amy Winehouse." For someone who doesn't like them, you sure seem to like writing about them. :P

I agree on many of the points you made, specifically and most of all I'm very glad Green Day actively support this cause. That's satisfying and that's something great for LGBTQ youth (and also for everybody else really!)

For the record, singer Billie Joe Armstrong is known to be bisexual and the drummer, Trè Cool, is also probably bisexual; plus, the band as a whole has always been very pro-LGBTQ through the years and since the very beginning of their careers.

    Still an awesome thing, though!

Well, proudly, I am a lesbian, and a chef just like Cat (<---that had nothing to do with much anything at all...) but seriously, people are people. Bisexuals/lesbians/straights, they all have something alike. Beating hearts, skin, and feelings. Honestly, when people put me last for somethings because of my S.O. (sexual orientation) it wasn't fair, I was dissapointed in my so called friends when they did the same to me. Gay discrimination should have stopped right when it started. Sheesh. -.- People that do *mean* stuff to gays should be discriminated them selves, let's see how they like it.

I didn't go to my prom because, quite frankly, i think it's pretty pointless. but for some people it is a really important rite of passage in their academic lives and for someone to be unable to attend because of their sexual preference is just wrong. Two thumbs way up for Green Day, Lance Bass, and (my personal fave) Cat Cora. Way to show the country that even a relatively unimportant event becomes important when discrimination rears its ugly head and everyone deserves a special night.

Hey, i like you writing style, but, what does liking or not liking Green Day have to do whether or not they attended a gay prom? That's like saying I won't go see Tom Petty because he stoped at a circle K store.
