Greek Olympic Athlete Expelled for Tweets. Good or Bad?

Freedom of speech at it's finest. You can't express yourself without hurting someone's feelings. Ridiculous.

Here is what she said - “With so many Africans in Greece, the West Nile mosquitoes will be getting home food”
I think the racist one was the official that said - “Let her make any miserable ‘jokes’ on social media while watching the games on TV. She definitely cannot represent Greece in London,” because he assumed that she only meant one of the many races that inhabit Africa and compete in the Olympic Games.

To support my claims I present to you several of the current African competitors from over 50 African countries and very diverse ethnic backgrounds below!

Google several of these and you can see that they are all as ethnically different as they can get. So, racism in Papachristou's tweet? Not hardly!!

One could say that she was being Nationalist (more like continental-ist maybe?), but isn't that the overt theme behind the Olympics to begin with?

she may have been a bit inappropriate in her joking but she has worked for years for these couple days....I would be pissed and if I were an athlete I wouldn't stand for it

People need to learn with social media, hard to take it back. She is young and opinionated, who wasn't:) Opinions change with maturity, she should concentrate on the athletics.

Social media has given people way too much power. I mean, if she were to say this to a friend in a crowded restaurant or whatever, no one would care...but the fact that she posted it on her Twitter is now all taboo. Makes me think the Olympics are watching their athletes like a hawk. Can't say "boo" on a social media site without someone reigning hell down upon you for saying it.

She violated the Olympic Charter, “any form of discrimination with regard to a country or a person on grounds of race, religion, politics, gender or otherwise is incompatible with belonging to the Olympic Movement.”

Discrimination would be preventing someone from participating. She only expressed an opinion. BIG difference.

If we expelled all the athletes who held racist views, then there wouldn't be many athletes left to compete! How many countries in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, South America don't have a culture where racism is the norm, and acceptable? And even in the west, many - if not most - hold some racist views.
Most people competing in this summer's Olympics will be racist, because most people in the world are racist.

It was dumb of her to post what she said but its even dumber to punish someone for their political beliefs. She shouldn't be forced to conform to whatever beliefs the Olympic movement has.

I think she is expressing what will become common throughout Europe, as its economic crisis gets worse. It looks like a return to the 1930s. Sorry honey, the Olympic Games were already held in Berlin.

No inappropriate tweets about the games or athletes. Each participants must sign that in addition to the doping clause.

So, commenting on the fact that an insect that was brought over from Africa would find plenty of home food with all the Africans that are competing, is racist? (The lineup of African atheltes this year are extremely diverse in race coming from 53 different African countries and over 20 different races. This year there are more African countries competing than there has been in a long time! )
