'Grease' Star Jeff Conaway Dies After Being Taken Off Life Support: Did Family Do the Right Thing?

"Grease" and "Taxi" star Jeff Conaway died Friday morning, one day after his family decided to take him off of life support, his manager told CNN.

The actor has spent the last two weeks in a medically induced coma in an Encino, Calif., hospital.

Perhaps because Conaway was recently featured on Dr. Drew's "Celebrity Rehab," initial rumors stated that the actor had slipped into a pill-induced coma. But manager Phil Brock said he had suffered from pneumonia and sepsis in recent weeks.

An unnamed source told RadarOnline, "There [was] no evidence that Jeff intentionally took an overdose of pills, period ... Jeff likely aspirated one of the pills into his lungs, prompting the pneumonia that he is now suffering from."

The Christian Post reports that there was no brain function for the entire two weeks Conaway was in a coma.

His family made the difficult decision to take him off life support despite rumors that Conaway's girlfriend was attempting to block the action. Do you think they did the right thing?

    I fully realize he hasn't died yet (I wrote this earlier today before news of his death became available)
    Maybe now he can find some peace!!!! When The time comes, may he have the peace and the serenity he couldn't find in this life.

    Serenity Prayer

    God grant me the serenity
    to accept the things I cannot change;
    courage to change the things I can;
    and wisdom to know the difference.
    Living one day at a time;
    Enjoying one moment at a time;
    Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
    Taking, as He did, this sinful world
    as it is, not as I would have it;
    Trusting that He will make all things right
    if I surrender to His Will;
    That I may be reasonably happy in this life
    and supremely happy with Him
    Forever in the next.
    Amen.

    I prefer to remember him like this world trusting surrender happy life supremely happy amen remember jeff conaway world trusting surrender happy life supremely happy amen remember jeff conaway

    Not as he was on Celebrity Rehab

    Since he was 'brain dead' then I think it's the right thing to do. I will certainly miss him. I loved him in 'Grease' and on 'Taxi'. I'm just really sad he couldn't beat his demons but at least not he's in a better place and not 'struggling' anymore.

    He was so screwed up from drugs.He seemed like a senile old man.I wish the young people would give it some thought what drugs can do to you.So many have died so young because
    of drugs.Yet on soda Head if you say your against Marijuana.Everyone jumps down your throat.
    Like I'm the stupid one.
    Of course his family did the right thing.He was brain dead.

    He has been through alot but to keep him there in a state of limbo is just wrong. Maybe he will find peace in the next stage after his life.

    I believe it is wrong to prolong the inevitable. If he was going to live, he would have continued to breathe when they took him off life support. I think the family did the right thing. Who would want to continue to live by being hooked up to a machine?

    Well death is always inevitable so you should kill yourself right this moment and not prolong the inevitable. ;) I've been waiting for someone to say "prolong the inevitable".

    Don't twist my words to mean what you want them to mean. You know very well that I was referring to the fact that he was on life support. He obviously brain dead and wasn't breathing on his own. If I am very ill and on life support, I don't want to be that way. As for killing myself right now, you are a sick person to even think such a thing, let alone say it. I don't care to associate with people like you. Good bye.

    The man had been trying to kill himself for years anyway. Although it was a hard decision for the family, I don't think anyone would want to live as a vegetable.

    I am sure that it was a very difficult decision. Our family once had a similar decision to make about a family member. There was no brain activity at all for quite some time and we knew that he would never want to live like that. So we finally had him taken off the life support and he only lived for a few hours afterwards.

    Blessings to Jeff's family. I hope that they all can find peace now.

    If there was no brain activity for two weeks, then there certainly was not going to be any showing up in subsequent weeks. Once the brain is dead, the soul has left the body. I imagine it just took a few weeks for the family to adjust to the idea before they began the process. Sad.

    I'm sorry for your loss. I lost my dad to lung cancer when I was 23 y/o. It's always hard to let a loved-one go, but when there is no more brain activity, the soul has already left the body. Families usually need a few weeks to get use to the idea before they make the decision to stop the machines.

    Amen! Thats what happened to Jeff in his life, sufferage. When I saw him on C. Rehab I felt sorry for him, he looked like a old man, bent over in pain, and in a wheelchair with a cane. A person can only take so much in life, his life was a living hell.
