Grammy Awards Suffers Big Ratings Slip: Were You Watching?

The 55th Annual Grammy Awards may have been heavy on star power, and boasted some great performances and pleasant surprises, but that hasn't translated into strong ratings.

In fact, according to Entertainment Weekly, CBS' coverage of Sunday night's awards pulled in 28.1 million viewers and a 10.0 rating among adults aged 18-49 when it was broadcast on Sunday night. Though those figures do seem impressive, it's a 30 percent decrease in viewers from last year's record-breaking show.

It seems that this may have a lot to do with the circumstances surrounding last year's show, which took place the day after the tragic death of Whitney Houston.

Though this year's figures represent a steep drop, it's still the second-highest number of viewers the show has enjoyed since 1993, and the broadcast was easily the most watched program of the night. Were you watching the Grammy Awards on Sunday night?

I seldom watch any of the ego-tripping awards shows. Art is art and it really shouldn't be a popularity contest.

just learned that Neilson still does there ratings the old fashion way. They survey th same way they always have. By phone. By mail. By their own black boxes they have been using fo 20 years. So not to worry if you leave your box on or not.

I don't think I'd be interested in much, if any, of the music being represented there. Most of the current bands I do like have been around for a while, and have already passed their opportunity to receive Grammys. Most genres I like don't even exist anymore.

Why do we care how the so-called celebrities pat each other on the back and give each other awards. What other profession wants the world to see them get accolades?

Saw and did listen for few intermittent minutes. Lots of noise, and vocal yelling and screaming. Music has lost its charm, and certainly has lost its melody.

The big record companies and radio stations control the outcome. Most of the best artist are that you never hear of have gone to the internet to sell their recordings. The age of the local DJ has fallen by the roadside years ago. It is illegal for DJ’s to except gifts from artist or record producers for air time play. This practice is called “Payola.” This does not apply to Program Managers. With more corporations taking over most of the local radio stations. Local artist lost local air time each time a corporation like “Clear Channel Radio” came in a d took over. The results was “Juke Box” radio. You are only going to here what they want you to here as many times per hour they like with a limited selection of recordings.
