Governor Chris Christie Appears on ‘SNL’: Is It Okay for Him to Joke About Sandy?

When Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast a few weeks ago, it seemed like it might never be a laughing matter. After all, the devastating super storm raged in various levels of intensity from Jamaica to Canada. Over 100 lives were lost, power outages and gas lines were plentiful and the damage is estimated to total over $60 billion dollars. Of all the affected areas, New Jersey was one of the hardest hit.

Chris Christie Governor New Jersey

That’s why the Garden State’s Governor has become the poster child of the disaster. In the post-storm, pre-presidential election days, he made headlines by setting politics aside to focus on his citizens in need. But as locals continued to clean up the aftermath of the destruction, Chris Christie took a little time out for a laugh last night. He appeared as himself on “Saturday Night Live” and talked about Sandy with “Weekend Update” host Seth Meyer. Of course he thanked the Red Cross. But he also joked about his short temper and poked fun at his now infamous blue fleece. He even managed to get in a jab at officials who didn’t encourage residents to evacuate like Atlantic City yor Lorenzo Langford before he quoted “saint” Bruce Springsteen.

It was a solid comedic performance, but some might find it inappropriate for the local leader to make light of such a serious situation. What do you think: Is it okay for him to joke about the Sandy?

I didn't see but just a very short clip..wish I had watched the whole show but I found his comment to be lighthearted especially in view of the devastation that is up to his thighbones. Humor can get us through almost anything...never forget it!

He was very insensitive. He should be worried about Obama's corruption and our countries destruction. It is so sickening to watch their nonchalant attitude. The rest of the other Republicans, should be worried about all the voter fraud that took place throughout America! Corruption is nothing to be laughing about, especially when our tax dollars are being used for it! They should be angry and looking for honest solutions instead of becoming participants!!!!!

Having heard parts of the skit, the thing was wonderfully self deprecating and punchy from a NJ point of view. A little introspection and humor is a wonderful thing to help resolve sorrow and distress from losses suffered.

First, remember that "...he made headlines by setting politics aside to focus on his citizens in need," so there's no doubt about where his heart is.

Second, SNL is a fun show that does satirical skits on anything and everything. Humor is a great way to deal with things. He wasn't irreverent. We are WAY too critical of everyone and everything; or perhaps I should use the term judgmental.

Many people deal with difficult situations with humor. I remember the jokes that went around after the Challenger explosion. Did that mean that people cared any less? No.

People, calm down. He didn't joke about the people who died- only the mundane things! Joan Rivers called New Orleans, 'the town that got wet.' Were all the moral people outraged then?

"Joan Rivers called New Orleans, 'the town that got wet.' Were all the moral people outraged then?" I think people expect that kind of thing from her, so that might be part of it.

True. But I don't see what all the fuss is about Christie. I bet the people who are angry are only the Republicans ho cringed when he praised Obama.

Christie is real big piece of work. He needs to be excommunicated from the Republican Party. His association with undesirable Middle Easterners alone warrants this.

How about instead of complaining about things that really don't matter, you go do something with your time?

He Is NOT joking about the devastation and suffering brought on by Sandy. I watched the skit, have close family (father, sisters, nephews, nieces, cousins) in both NY and NJ who were affected by the storm, and not for a minute was I offended. I know Christie cares about the people of NJ, and for him to poke fun about things like his own jacket is quite harmless.
I would guess that people on here voting "no" did not actually watch the skit. Again, he is not joking about the storm itself. You would have to watch the skit to understand. The wording of the SH question is misleading the reader to think he is joking about Sandy itself.

The governor preform very well during the hurricane in the following first few days was on site doing what he could to help. Made the one mistake of calling in Obama and fema who did little but stand in the way of progress that NJ people where prepared for long before the storm hit. Church groups and Apparently the group known as occupy. But yes he deserves to blow off a little steam and I for one think many others in NJ feel the same way.

He didn't call in FEMA, the President has a natural obligation to offer help and Christie accepted it. What would you be saying about the President if he hadn't offer help ? You can't have it both ways.
