People are still trying to work out whether Disney's $4 billion purchase of Lucasfilm was a good or bad idea for the company, but thanks to George Lucas it will certainly prove to have been a good thing for the world. The legendary "Star Wars" creator has apparently decided to donate the vast majority of that money to charity.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Lucas plans to put the money into a foundation that focuses on educational issues, a cause close to his heart. A spokesperson said that “George Lucas has expressed his intention, in the event the deal closes, to donate the majority of the proceeds to his philanthropic endeavors.”

In a statement on Wednesday, Lucas himself commented: “For 41 years, the majority of my time and money has been put into the company. As I start a new chapter in my life, it is gratifying that I have the opportunity to devote more time and resources to philanthropy.”

This holds up with Lucas’ generous behavior over the last few years. In 2010 he signed The Giving Pledge, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett’s effort to get America’s wealthiest to donate the majority of their wealth to philanthropy. Around the same time, he declared that he would be “dedicating the majority of my wealth to improving education,” which he described as “the key to the survival of the human race.”

    Bill Gates, along with many others, have decided to give billions away a couple years ago. This is nothing new. As generous as it is, I still wouldn't say Lucas is the most generous.

    In order of donation amount as of 2011:
    Warren Buffett (Total Donations: $40,780,000,000);
    Bill & Melinda Gates ( Total Donations: $28,144,000,000);
    Gordon and Betty Moore (Total Donations: $7,404,000,000);
    George Soros (Total Donations: $6,401,000,000);
    George Kaiser (Total Donations: $2, 522,000,000);
    Ted Turner (Total Donations: $1,500,000,000)
    The amounts are staggering! I doubt that any "celebrity" has matched these.
    Whatever the amounts, however, they are fantastic.

  • Jeff exhon2009 2012/11/04 04:57:52 (edited)
    Jeff
    I'm so glad you asked.

    "Although Bill Gates might try to say that the Foundation is not linked to his business, all it proves is the opposite: most of their donations end up favoring the commercial investments of the tycoon, not really “donating” anything, but instead of paying taxes to the state coffers, he invests his profits in where it is favorable to him economically, including propaganda from their supposed good intentions. On the contrary, their “donations” finance projects as destructive as geoengineering or replacement of natural community medicines for high-tech patented medicines in the poorest areas of the world. What a coincidence, former Secretary of Health Julio Frenk and Ernesto Zedillo are advisers of the Foundation".

    NOT Lucas. Paul Newman only used his celebrity to promote the charity, Johnny Carson, and many others kept it anonymous, how it should be. Let's first see if Lucas really does this. Bill Gates and Ted Turner--YOU'RE KIDDING?

    Years ago Ted Turner "announced" at a press conference that he called that he was going to donate 1 Billion dollars to the U.N. over the succeeding ten years. He then proceeded to excoriate Bill Gates because he had "only" given, (note the past tense form of the verb), something like 300 Million to charity.

    Gates didn't restrict his donation to beneficiaries outside the U.S. and he had given REAL money. To this date I've no idea if Turner ever made good on his promise of FUTURE giving. Turner deserves his title of Mouth of the South.

    Before Bill Gates married, he was notoriously cheap and had a terrible track record about giving, in spite of having more wealth than even a small nation might be able to spend. He is more generous now, thanks in part to his wife.

    I am glad that there are wealthy people out there who see their wealth as a way to make the world a better place, though.
  • Jeff Pele Em... 2012/11/04 03:20:30

    Gates cheated enough people just on his "convenient success of the lawsuit" that calimed Microsoft was not a monopoly, to feed all the poor of a small country.

    If I stole a lot of money I might be super generous, after all it's actually someone else's money.

    Please note that I did NOT choose him, either. I don't think he'd be giving one red cent, if it was up to him personally. However, his significant other, as well as his PR department, push him in that direction.

    I don't think I'm going to worry a lot about a bunch of rich and powerful guys who like to run naked in the woods and pee on trees. You can see conspiracy in the sunrise, but you don't have to do that.

    As for the Crips, if they had a membership list, what makes you think the bulk of the members could read it?
