People are still trying to work out whether Disney's $4 billion purchase of Lucasfilm was a good or bad idea for the company, but thanks to George Lucas it will certainly prove to have been a good thing for the world. The legendary "Star Wars" creator has apparently decided to donate the vast majority of that money to charity.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Lucas plans to put the money into a foundation that focuses on educational issues, a cause close to his heart. A spokesperson said that “George Lucas has expressed his intention, in the event the deal closes, to donate the majority of the proceeds to his philanthropic endeavors.”

In a statement on Wednesday, Lucas himself commented: “For 41 years, the majority of my time and money has been put into the company. As I start a new chapter in my life, it is gratifying that I have the opportunity to devote more time and resources to philanthropy.”

This holds up with Lucas’ generous behavior over the last few years. In 2010 he signed The Giving Pledge, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett’s effort to get America’s wealthiest to donate the majority of their wealth to philanthropy. Around the same time, he declared that he would be “dedicating the majority of my wealth to improving education,” which he described as “the key to the survival of the human race.”

Whats larger 9 billion, 1-4 billion, 8 billion, or 28 billion. If we judge generosity on size of gifts then Bill is definitely the winner.

I watched his seminar with Sal Khan on education. Both men are admirable because they don't just throw money at the problem. They innovate. They try to solve the problems. Public education is run by old people who can't see that these technological interlopers (Tablets, the internet, etc.) can be more efficient than paper, and textbooks. That's not to say that technology is the best for everything. My point is that it's admirable that they're taking their money and putting it into things that will have a very high chance of making education better.

    Hard to live on 5ok.
About $16,000 off the top for payroll taxes taxes. Rent 24,000 a year. 5,000 a year for food.
Electric and heating $3,000 a year.
I understand the low income population provides most charity money? Bill Gates, Lucas, Buffet are extraordinary people. Most wealthy are tightwads.

Agree. My point being when you're only making 50k to give up 5k is a big sacrifice. Gates et al's donations are appreciated but they are giving from their excess

Just look at all the Americans who lost jobs to his outsourcing and his hiring of people from other countries, that he imports in, assisting them with Visas, so they can come here, and work for him cheaply.

I think, to date, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has given the most. They have moved American school kids into the Tech age with their generous computer lab donations to any who show a need...even a small need. They have also empowered Senior Citizens by donating computers and trainers to countless Senior Citizen facilities.

Since thwere was no room for "other" I chose Gates, but I see it as a tie between Gates-Buffett-Ted Turner-George Lucas-Jimmy Carter-Bill and Hillary Clinton-Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. While some have deeper pocketbooks and resources, other's comtribute by money, energy, and time.

If I had billions I would donate but would be sure not to give to unqualified but rather to those deserving with academic and financial status that qualifies them for the donation. I would make sure no political cause is a determining factor.

...why isn't my hero, Paul Newman on this list?? He's been dead a few years now, but he's still giving, since 90% of the proceeds of the "Newnam's Own" brand goes to charity...not to mention the untold hundreds of millions of dollars he gave to charity when he was alive...

To truly be altruistic you have to take the middle path, you don't have to live a life of self-deprevation but you shouldn't live a lavish life. I think its great someone is helping so many and living a modest life. Especially since its to education! Providing better lives and helping form future charitable successful people. Everyone else is great for thinking of others as well.

Bill Gates is a devil is disguise. It is sickening to see so many people fooled by many of the men on this list, Ted Turner and Warner Buffet included. They men are eugenicists who believe in massive population reduction and are using all their wealth to accomplish that goal. Bill Gates' vaccines have been causing massive sterilization throughout the third world countries where they are provided. He also is a large owner of Monstanto, whose GM food has been proven through hundreds of independent studies to cause infertility after three generations of consumption, cancer, organ failure and several other complications. All of these men are members of the Bilderberg Group, which was created by Nazi SS leader Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands. The purpose of the group was to establish the global government under their control, in which they can then implement their plan for global population extermination. Ted Turner has repeatedly called for massive population reduction publicly, sighting 80 percent as the number that needs to be eliminated. He constantly promotes a 1 child policy, while he has 5 himself.

Sounds like a James Bond plot and is just as fictional.
You do realize that you can reduce the world population without killing people?
Why did the WHO put in so much effort to reduce smoking if they want more people to die?
It sounds like you've been sucked in by people like Alex Jones. Think for yourself.
