George Lindsey Dies at 83: Do You Still Watch 'The Andy Griffith Show'?

Young people might not be as familiar with George Lindsey's work, but thanks to retro channels like TV Land and, of course, the Internet, it's easily accessible. Lindsey is best known for playing the lovable, dimwitted auto mechanic Goober Pyle from "The Andy Griffith Show" (not to be confused with the better-known Gomer Pyle, played by Jim Nabors). Though not technically a main character on the show, Lindsey appeared on 86 of its 249 episodes, or roughly a third. He was also on the cast of "Hee Haw" for 20 years and appeared in a number of shows including "Gunsmoke," "C.H.I.P.S.," and "M*A*S*H."

According to The Tennessean, Lindsey passed away at 12:05 Sunday morning in Nashville after "an extended hospitalization." He was 83. Andy Griffith said in a statement, "Our last conversation was a few days ago. We would talk about our health, how much we missed our friends who passed before us and usually about something funny. I am happy to say that as we found ourselves in our eighties, we were not afraid to say, 'I love you.' That was the last thing George and I had to say to each other. 'I love you.'"

Unfortunately I live out in what we call "the sticks," so I have to take what's available. I can still whistle the theme song though.

Watch it all the time. Practically know every word in every scene of every episode. Grew up in a small town in North Carolina that was very much like Mayberry. Actually Aunt Bea retired here. My favorite is Opey's Ill Gotten Gain. It is the one where Barney is attempting to recite the Preamble to the Constitution to Andy. In my opinion that was one of the funniest five minutes of television ever put on tape. To watch his expressions during that was just incredible acting and humor. I bust out laughing every time I see it as though it was the first time. There is a life's lesson to be learned in every episode. Oh, life was so simple in those days.

I am a teenager and watch this show sometimes on youtube.
It is sad he passed away because I just watched an epidsoe where he warned Andy that Peggy was playing him like a baracuda. That was funny and he was a great character.
Andy Griffith is a good show with good morals.

From time to time, when I am "surfing" I will stop and watch a little or a lot. It was a happy and sometimes brilliant view of what we wish the old days were.

Not often, but every once in a while I'll catch a few episodes and reminisce. I loved the show then and I still do today. It's clean, wholesome and funny without being lewd, suggestive or embarrassing!
As to George Lindsey.. his family.. a funny man and all I ever heard about him was good. RIP Mr. Lindsey.. we loved you too.

Gomer was played by Jim Neighbors, I think they were supposed to be cousins or something.

Yes, nothing quite like watching such a wholesome program. With all of the horrible thing on the TV really refreshing to see there really was a time when people where kind and thoughtful.

WE have a channel on cable that caters to these retro type shows. IT is always nice to every once in awhile tune in and watch The Andy Griffith Show. Even after all these years the humor is welcomed.

It's sad to say but shows like this have gone the way of the Westerns; I miss them both. You know you're getting old when you realize that you can currently watch Opie as a little boy and Andy as a fair, well disciplined sheriff on the same week as you are watching Matlock. Little Opie has become a great producer and director. My how time flies.

That was a good show but Gunsmoke and Have Gun Will Travel were my favorites as a teenager. I was a little older for the Big Valley and never got into that show. Bonanza later became my favorite Western.

The media message TV delivers today is devoted to teaching our young how to be the best trashy whore or crook you can be. The Andy Griffith show was good stuff with great social commentary on tolerance and simplicity.

Every Chance I Get! This old showas full of great life lessons, Family Values and Moral directuves. Where on the Network lineup can you find anything to compare? So sad to watch Christian ethics ,morality, good will and common sense die in entertainment media.

I love the Andy Griffith show, but only the black and white ones. The color versions are just awful - poor writing, and Andy's character changed to a sour, grumpy a-hole.

While I'm sure George Lindsay was a good person, and I feel for his family and friends at the time of his passing, the character "Goober" was just annoying and stupid. Someone that arrogant and that stupid is just irritating.

God rest his soul. He had a long life and apparently a happy one. Good for him. We can all hope to be so blessed.

That being said, I never thought the Goober character to be all that funny. The show was best during it's first three or four seasons. When he was made a regular, the quality of the writing went downhill just a bit. Then, when Don Knots left the series and the program reverted to color, the program tanked creatively.

The spinoff - Mayberry RFD - was so awful that it's actually fun to watch. It's so bad it's entertaining.
