Young people might not be as familiar with George Lindsey's work, but thanks to retro channels like TV Land and, of course, the Internet, it's easily accessible. Lindsey is best known for playing the lovable, dimwitted auto mechanic Goober Pyle from "The Andy Griffith Show" (not to be confused with the better-known Gomer Pyle, played by Jim Nabors). Though not technically a main character on the show, Lindsey appeared on 86 of its 249 episodes, or roughly a third. He was also on the cast of "Hee Haw" for 20 years and appeared in a number of shows including "Gunsmoke," "C.H.I.P.S.," and "M*A*S*H."

According to The Tennessean, Lindsey passed away at 12:05 Sunday morning in Nashville after "an extended hospitalization." He was 83. Andy Griffith said in a statement, "Our last conversation was a few days ago. We would talk about our health, how much we missed our friends who passed before us and usually about something funny. I am happy to say that as we found ourselves in our eighties, we were not afraid to say, 'I love you.' That was the last thing George and I had to say to each other. 'I love you.'"

Nope. I haven't watched the Andy Griffith show in a long time. However, I did watch it back in the day. I really enjoyed it. R.I.P. George Lindsey. :(

I do you watch it on occasion. It's not good as I LOVE LUCY, THE HONEYMOONERS, THE BURNS & ALLEN SHOW, GET SMART, THE ADDAMS FAMILY, or MCHALES NAVY. but good. THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW really went downhill when Don Knotts as Deputy Barney Fife left the series in 1964-65 and when the show went to color. TAGS became less and less funny after it went to color and Andy Griffth wasn't happy with the way his show was going. That disappointment was clearly shown in the expression on Andy's face in many a color episode.

I enjoy reruns of the Andy Griffith, Mayberry RFD, and Matlock whenever I have time and resources to view them (ie. cable, hulu, over-the-air, etc.). I only wish I had better
access to more time, money and resources so I could enjoy Andy Griffith and many
    other great American icons.
George will truly be missed. RIP Cousin Goober.

Usually the ones Don Knotts appeared in once he left the show lost quite a bit of zip.

Don't get to see it as much as I'd like, but when I can, I love to return to Mayberry for a gut-busting laugh with a moral. George rest in peace, and be sure to tell Barney and Aunt Bea "Hey!"

I was (still am) a huge fan of Barney Fife. After he left the show, it wasn't the same for me. I liked Goober while Barney was still there. In fact, Barney and Goober's interaction often produced a lot of laughs. But that didn't mean Goober wasn't a lovable character. I just was too wrapped up in Barney. But George Lindsey did a great job and it's sad to have to say goodbye.

I didn't know George was a "character actor" who had appeard on "Twilight Zone" and other shows at that time. I never thought of him playing a "bad guy" or as a serious type character. On "Andy Griffth", he did a really good job.
