George Clooney has never been one to shy away from the microphone, but politics are usually his forte. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the "Descendants" star took to sexism in the movie industry with as much zeal, saying it's nearly impossible for women to lead in blockbusters these days, and that it's only gotten worse in the last few decades.

Clooney told EW, "There's this strange thing that's happened over the last 25 or 30 years where there's this decision being made that women aren't able to carry the box office ... It's much harder to get a film with a woman lead made. When a man hits 40 is when roles just begin to happen. And for women it doesn't happen. I find that to be a very concerning issue."

He went on to cite "The Help" and "Bridesmaids" as evidence that women can lead movies to the box office if given the chance.

Women of a certain age, or past it, can barely get acting jobs, but men of the same age or older still get all kinds of leading roles. Women get paid less for lead roles, get less publicity for lead roles, don't have NEARLY as many script choices for lead roles.

So, in an industry in a city where they bitch, moan , scream and use their awards pulpit to admonish equality for illegals and anyone else, THEY themselves treat women like third class citizens AND women there are still HIGHLY likely to be subjected to casting couch demands for roles.

Showbiz is a business where image is everything. Beautiful young actresses and handsome actors sell more tickets.

They'll even put up with a republican like Mel Gibson, until people think he is too old and the box office suffers, then they'll throw him under the bus. (Clint Eastwood has too many oscars for producer & director, so he is untouchable).

    Hollywood is sexist.
    Against men, that is.
You can't watch any movie nowadays without all of the male charachters being made to look either like sex obsessed slobs or hopeless idiots.

As long as men are taking most of the male roles and women are taking most of the female roles, I'd say that's pretty sexist.

I would venture to say that every organization is to some degree in both directions. But yeah, in Hollywood world the female lead is almost invariably young, attractive, and vulnerable. While this is generally true of the male lead too, the difference is that whenever there is a female exception to this rule, it's always the central gimmick of the movie. This is much less often true of male exceptions.

Let me see, Universal City, (part of Hollywood) The Hollywood Fwy, 101 on the east side is Universal Studios. Right across the fwy is Vivid Entertainment home offices. They pay women more for "acting" than they pay men, and usually the women are the headliners & men are supporting characters. Oh wait, That's Adult Entertainment! Oh yea it is not unusual to see a male star over 30 perform, but seldom see a woman over 25... Hmmm...

If it takes a celebrity to ask this for people to start thinking, then I will cry. Most people are will at least grudgingly admit this is so. They are pretty bad, and yet sadly, Disney, who makes movies for children is worse. 

George Clooney is right about Hollywood it is Sexist, however I believe there are females out there who could carry the box office. For one Meryl Streep who got 10 roles that earned her Oscar nominations . She the best living actress alive and there no one could match her style in any role. The problem I see would be finding creative writers and or story writer who could actually write a scrip for such a role.
Salt with Angelina Jolee in my opinion was good which I would rate 3.5 start and I would look forward in seeing Salt 2.

Perhaps George and Meryl should collaborate and make female lead movie that could carry the box office. This can not be an easy task to do, but it could be done. Meryl Streep

You can still find a man in his 60's with a starring role on screen but for a woman in her 60's it's time to retire, hell she probably has to retire from acting in her mid 40's.

Then there's the issue of women being the heros... There are almost none of them.

Women are just used for the demand for sex on screen.

I find it sad that people say that they are so ready to give minorities like gays, their rights in our society yet women are still far down that list. Has anyone ever noticed how women are usually the last to be accepted and be given the same rights as any man of any race? Hollywood is just as sexist as any other group in society.

I say yes and no. We have all seen women take lead roles in movies, but only for eye candy and sappy romance movie. I would like to see actresses take more of a lead role in action movies than men. I'm not trying to be sexist, but I'm tired of male actors always being the main character.

Let's see... Women like Bette Davis had to fight the Studio System in the 1930's, young actresses were called starlets for years, the "casting couch" was no joke. If you aren't young, beautiful, and sexy, you probably won't make it in Hollywood.

And there's a QUESTION about whether Hollywood is sexist? Bwhahaha...

    Good for George.

Hollywood doesn't have enough Liberals running it.... oh, wait, it has nearly 100% Liberal Democrats running (or more likely "ruining") the film industry.

No wonder fewer people see movies these days. The left fills movies with unAmerican messages. Hollywood hasn't adopted to new media and focuses more on itself than its audience.

I cannot say for sure...but folks with an imagination...including artists and poets...tend to the left. Conservatives only know mostly how to create documentaries...or things more concrete that do not require thinking outside the box.

Life experience and the fact conservatives are wired differently than liberals. Both have valid claims to the pursuit of happiness in America and only compromises are going to govern us towards a satisfactory result. Both sides not only need to be heard but respected if America is to survive as a free nation. We have been leaning too far right during the Bush years...and the last three years has been a struggle to the center. If you will notice, Obama always. compromises towards the center. You get a centrist result by steering left...because. the GOP are pulling so hard to the right.
