Mascots taunt, tease and tempt athletes to rile up the crowd. But apparently, they can also piss off some people, too. Cameras captured the mascot abuse dished out by Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad, an Algerian-born runner in Helsinki, Finland during the European Athletic Championship.

The French runner and gold medalist won the event and then pushed over "Appy," the mascot who represents "live results and other information to mobile devices." Watch the video of the assault against the 14-year old girl inside the Appy costume and then share if you think it's kind of funny... or really rude.

I think the whole idea of the of messing with the atheltes is a bit messed up cause you never know someones limits cuz one little thing can spark a fuse. So i think the mascots should stick to funny dances and all sorta think then anoying the atheltes. But I dont think it was right of the athelte attacking either regardless of who was under the suit. The athlete knows what the purpose and what the mascot does so they need to be pro about it then loosing control

The mascot didn't really appear to be taunting him from what I saw so yeah I'd call it rude.

I attended a college Basketball game at the University of Cincinnati about a decade ago where the ref actually ejected their mascot, that was the only time I can remember seeing that ever happen?

I consider this the fault of the company for which the girl was 'dressed'. I also imagine the runner will be heavily scolded for his actions.
There is NO such thing anymore of "Amateur" sports, because the events themselves are sponsored, even if the athletes are not.

The mascot being square & white looks like a symbol of surrendering. Probably not the best image to present to a Frenchman.
