Frank Ocean Just Came Out: Will the Rap Community Embrace a Gay Star?

First there was Anderson Cooper. Now, it’s Frank Ocean’s turn to step out of the closet and admit his sexuality to the world. But what makes Frank’s disclosure particularly powerful is that he is one of the first rap artists to do so. Is the member of the rap group Odd Future taking a big risk putting himself out there into unchartered territory?

It is fitting that Ocean revealed his true self on Independence Day and in his statement he said, “I feel like a free man." It remains to be seen if his fans and fellow artists will embrace his courage or turn their backs on him. In the Twittersphere, some celebs have already stepped up and supported Ocean. His fellow Odd Future band mate Tyler the Creator tweeted, "My Big Brother Finally *** Did That. Proud Of That *** Cause I Know That *** Is Difficult Or Whatever." Solange Knowles’ tweet said simply, “I salute you, brave soul. Independence Day.” And Chely Wright, the first lesbian to come out in country music, said, “I can't think of a better way for Frank to celebrate Independence Day. It's spectacular."

But will the big boys of the hip hop world step up for Frank? Only time will tell. It will also take a few weeks to find out the repercussions on record sales when his debut solo album “Channel Orange” hits the streets. With love songs that use the pronoun “him,” will his fans take offense or will they push through the homophobia and start a new era in the genre? What do you think: Will the rap community embrace a gay star?

Call me pessimistic, but I honestly don't think gay rappers are going to be "embraced" any time soon. Of course there will be a select few who accept him with open arms. However, this is a genre of music that revolves money, materialism, women, sex, ect. If the rapper in question does not adhere to these four key points, I don't see him being universally accepted.

Rappers hate "bitches", except for fronting them with a lot of booty shaking, so their bent may very well be for homosexual men for real relationships. They may be upset with Ocean for blowing the cover.

If that is the case; rappers like Lowkey wouldn't be doing well. Yeah he doesn't get as many play as Lil Wayne, but his message is getting through and so will Franks.

No knock on Wayne ... but these guys are better than he is. While I disagree with Immortal Technique on some more of this more polarizing stances. He is better as well . but these guys get so little play . Unless you go out looking for them. They just don’t pop up like Wayne .

I'm stating these guys are better than Lil Wayne, and they are starting to gain ground. I've been paying attention to all the conscious and intellectual rappers and a movement is brewing.

Frank, Lowey, Akala, Lupe Fiasco, Globalfaction Movement, Immortal Technique, Nate, Logic, and so many others are piercing into mainstream.

As long as Frank does Frank, everything should agree. I hate how people all of a sudden go homophobe when they find out. If his music is good and if his hearts in the right place then nothing should be judging him... Humanity can be so cruel to our own kind :c

Most people do now-a-days. And since I'm sure that no old, traditional, homophobic men aren't going to be listening to rap music, he probably won't have the biggest problems (:

What about the young, modern, homophobic men? Rap music is a very honest music genre - they state what they like, and what they don't like. I honestly don't see homosexuals, or the more lax, modern term "gay" rappers being as widely accepted as people are claiming. That said, you don't have to be homophobic to be intolerant of homosexuals.

Um... Homophobic is the term for people who are intolerant of homosexuals.
Maybe I don't know enough about the rap community. But I do know that basically all of the people in my life are tolerant (I'm talking about my friends and classmates). And from what I've seen, most of the rap community is younger. And so, the younger the fanbase, the more tolerant... That's just an observation...
But really, what are the chances that his listeners are even going to know that he's gay even if he outed himself? Maybe dedicated fans will know, but they should be dedicated enough to not care about that. If you like the music, you like the music! His sexual orientation shouldn't matter then.
