Frank Ocean Just Came Out: Will the Rap Community Embrace a Gay Star?

First there was Anderson Cooper. Now, it’s Frank Ocean’s turn to step out of the closet and admit his sexuality to the world. But what makes Frank’s disclosure particularly powerful is that he is one of the first rap artists to do so. Is the member of the rap group Odd Future taking a big risk putting himself out there into unchartered territory?

It is fitting that Ocean revealed his true self on Independence Day and in his statement he said, “I feel like a free man." It remains to be seen if his fans and fellow artists will embrace his courage or turn their backs on him. In the Twittersphere, some celebs have already stepped up and supported Ocean. His fellow Odd Future band mate Tyler the Creator tweeted, "My Big Brother Finally *** Did That. Proud Of That *** Cause I Know That *** Is Difficult Or Whatever." Solange Knowles’ tweet said simply, “I salute you, brave soul. Independence Day.” And Chely Wright, the first lesbian to come out in country music, said, “I can't think of a better way for Frank to celebrate Independence Day. It's spectacular."

But will the big boys of the hip hop world step up for Frank? Only time will tell. It will also take a few weeks to find out the repercussions on record sales when his debut solo album “Channel Orange” hits the streets. With love songs that use the pronoun “him,” will his fans take offense or will they push through the homophobia and start a new era in the genre? What do you think: Will the rap community embrace a gay star?

He raps about life .. and things besides hoes and money . His gayness is not the issue . It is his message.

Some rappers will and some rappers won't.

It's still a touchy subject, especially in the black community.
And don't come talk to me about how it's the rap community not the black community.

Rap community embrace him? No they won't just like the mainstream rap community doesn't embrace openly Christian rappers who express thier faith in raps or are overly clean and non commercial in what they rap about. Wll the HIP HOP COMMUNITY in which rap is only a subgenre/related style/skill of the hip hop genre embrace him? It's very possible as many gay friendly artists and listeners listen to hip hop or hip hop infused music but don't usually listen to rap. So Ocean will likely have to carve out a niche in the rap genre. Chely Wright I haven't heard of but country music is a lot like rap music in that the audience for that music isn't that receptive to LBGT people in that genre especially if it bleeds into thier music too much. The Dixie Chicks almost killed thier careers when thier political views bled too much into thier music careers. So he took a brave risk in coming out publically and now he'll have to be careful with how much his personal life bleeds into his music cuz too much could end his career.

I don't think being gay will have any bearing on how the rap community treats him, it doesn't change who he is or his talent.

Odd Future have taken a lot of bad press for being homophobic, yet they now have two openly gay/bi members. Hopefully this will put that argument to bed. That said, It's about time hip-hop embraced homosexuality, in fact it's about time society embraced it properly. That story Frank told was beautiful. Two people falling in love who didn't want to fall in love, but couldn't help doing so. I'm not sure Frank has come out as gay or bisexual here, but it's great to see such a talent guy not oppressed by the shackles a hateful society. The man makes music about life, true life. His music isn't about bragging rights, isn't about guns, bitches and bling... it's about life. He's a genuine artist. You may not support his sexuality, his genre or his music, but you damn well got to respect him. It's good to see a genuine and honest person, using their talents for good rather than greed.

The country side can't seem to get its act together for the same, so no. The down low in black spheres is still a major issue.

I think Frank Ocean will be accepted for the fact that Odd Future is more of an indie group many fans of groups like them are not as stubborn when it comes to something like this, hints the name "ODD Future", whereas if he where more mainstream hip hop he would probably have hell being a success. I think it may take some time but I think Ocean will be accepted into the rap music industry.

I do not believe the majority of the rap community will accept him for being a homosexual because they talk so much about how bad it is to be gay and they name call many people by calling them "gay" or fag". It is not right and upsetting but that is my honest opinion on what they will do. This is coming from someone who is a rap addict and listens to it 24/7 personally.

In reality because of what we'v come to know about rap. I'td be hard for the community to accept drastic changes that alter there veiw in anextreem ways. Society should in all reality theres nothing wrong with it. But if we do what will most likely happen is the Rap industry will fail. So lets hope this doesent happen.

I don't care if he is gay or not, if I like his music, I will listen to it. Right now, I don't know who he is, if his music is good enough, I will hear it eventually. His sexual orientation has no bearing on his success, and if it does (either way) then that is sad to me.
