Frank Ocean Just Came Out: Will the Rap Community Embrace a Gay Star?

First there was Anderson Cooper. Now, it’s Frank Ocean’s turn to step out of the closet and admit his sexuality to the world. But what makes Frank’s disclosure particularly powerful is that he is one of the first rap artists to do so. Is the member of the rap group Odd Future taking a big risk putting himself out there into unchartered territory?

It is fitting that Ocean revealed his true self on Independence Day and in his statement he said, “I feel like a free man." It remains to be seen if his fans and fellow artists will embrace his courage or turn their backs on him. In the Twittersphere, some celebs have already stepped up and supported Ocean. His fellow Odd Future band mate Tyler the Creator tweeted, "My Big Brother Finally *** Did That. Proud Of That *** Cause I Know That *** Is Difficult Or Whatever." Solange Knowles’ tweet said simply, “I salute you, brave soul. Independence Day.” And Chely Wright, the first lesbian to come out in country music, said, “I can't think of a better way for Frank to celebrate Independence Day. It's spectacular."

But will the big boys of the hip hop world step up for Frank? Only time will tell. It will also take a few weeks to find out the repercussions on record sales when his debut solo album “Channel Orange” hits the streets. With love songs that use the pronoun “him,” will his fans take offense or will they push through the homophobia and start a new era in the genre? What do you think: Will the rap community embrace a gay star?

He raps about life .. and things besides hoes and money . His gayness is not the issue . It is his message.

I bet it was hard to admit to the world but I think because of the respect of his music and the message he sends, he'll be fine.

I think it should be, but the thing about the artists being gay is it makes it hard for a listener who is a straight male to see himself in it anymore. I'm a huge fan of Franks work, but I don't really see myself riding out singing along with a song that's talking about another man. Maybe that's wrong, but it's the way it is. I get really invested in lyrics, as do a lot of people, and knowing that a song was created to be sung with another man in mind makes it hard, just in the same way as its hard for a dude to get into a song a girl sings about a guy, even if the song is catchy. As humans, we care a lot about the origins of the things we like, and I have no issue with franks sexuality, just the idea that now his songs don't really relate as much anymore.

They will talk about tolerance, but rappers have gained a reputation for hating everyone -- the police, women, posers, etc...

Who the heck is Frank Ocean? Is he any relation to Billy Ocean?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Also, given how absolutely uber religious certain members of the "hip hop" community are, I have my doubts about him -not- turning up dead in a ditch somewhere because he looked at someone "the wrong way."

But really, who gives a crap if they don't? Frank Ocean is a SINGER, not a rapper and there are enough gay, famous, singers in the world for his coming out not to be an issue. He's not even the first BLACK gay singer....so again, who cares? His voice is heaven (&even; though I can no longer fantasize about him while he croons) I can still enjoy his music, which is SUPERB. ❤ Channel Orange ❤

They will say "Oh well it's okay," but behind closed doors it won't be. He will get teased but it's really bullied. Majority of the rapping world is homo-phobed. I don't see a difference between bi or gay. Still doing the same sex, just more of a hoe. I think he is full on gay and only saying "bi" to ease his way through a tight space (no pun intended). Reality is that it won't be approved. 5-10 years from now he will either be non-exitent as an artist or just behind the scenes. Future Rap Community: "Yes, you are talented so...stay inside so we can use your gifts but we don't want you next to us on stage."

I'm a straight ally but most people I know that love rap music....are homophobic in some way. I mean they say they have no problem with it if they didn't know the person, but the moment its a friend its like "S**t. you are?" and then they stay uncomfortable about the entrie thing and laugh about it and it turns into a kind of bullying. Like the "macho man" image completely fell away.

If you are a celebrity you can get away with anything. You could molest someone and still be fine.

Why would the rap community have anything to do with this? He is actually a singer/songwriter. And besides, gay or bisexuality is nothing new in the music industry. So, I doubt he will have any problems from anyone in the industry.

Yes! I had to look and check for myself too. I even checked his stuff that he did under the name of Lonnie Breaux. Still not a rapper. And yeah, as long as he makes good music and does not make his music about that lifestyle or be in your face with it, I think he will be ok.

Since he's just eliminated the sum total of the rapper's subject matter, it leaves him very little to rap about! The macho cool club of the rapper-ista's who spend much of their day pontificating about their ho's and b!tches aren't ready to embrace the unconscionable proclivities of something so unnatural indeed abominable to their world!
I remember the earlier spat between Eminem and Elton John.

Blacks have historically rejected homosexuals and homosexuality. The vast majority of gay blacks remain "in the closet" for fear of rejection by friends and family. They keep their homosexual activities "on the down low" to avoid being ostracized within their communities.
