Foster MRI: Should NFL Require Disclosure of Injuries?

Arian Foster revealed today that he had an MRI of a hamstring injury. This potentially devastating injury to a franchise player has huge financial impact on the league, gamblers and fantasy football players.

Injuries to key players can make/break a game or even an entire season. Arian Foster ran for 10 zillion yards last season and gave fantasy players lots of points and wins. Many fantasy leagues play for money. So they could have wasted a #1 draft pick an injured Arian Foster for the 2011 season without knowing of an injury.

Sportsbooks and gamblers also need to know this information to make good bets. Foster's injury could have added up to millions of dollars in bad bets made by people.

Foster, the Texans and the NFL kept all these people 'in the dark' by not disclosing it.

dollars bets people foster texans nfl people dark disclosing Foster tweeted an update about his injury: "If I had a "significant injury" why post it? I'll be fine, it was jus meant to make fun of the whole situation. Humor is lost nowadays."

Humor? Wall Street investors would sue anyone who joked about the "health" of a company in which they invested.

Maybe the NFL or Texans didn't know. Maybe Foster withheld the information from everyone -- his doctor cannot disclose the injury because of HIPPA privacy laws. Some people argue that need to change all that for public figures like Foster and Steve Jobs, who had to resign from Apple because of his poor health.

I side with the player and the team. They may want privacy for personal or strategic reason. Gamblers should "bake in" the potential for injury and secrecy. If both sides hide injuries then it evens out. The NFL doesn't have a fiduciary responsbility to gamblers and fantasy players like a publicly traded company.

The story from SI:
Arian Foster reveals hamstring MRI

The Texans — not to mention fantasy owners everywhere — are crossing their fingers that Arian Foster’s hamstring injury will heal in time for the 1,600-yard back to be ready for Week 1 against the Colts. Foster tweeted Wednesday what he said was an image of an MRI he had on the hamstring.

The NFL is a business. Owners have the right to know what they are getting just as consumers have the right to know what they are buying.

Professional sports. YUCK! I gave up on any professional sport years ago. What a waste of time and money. Gamblers? I hope they all lose their shirts. And fantacy football? Really, get a life people. Surely you can find something more constructive and fun to do. All of these activities involve stitting on your keester. No wonder Americans are out of shape and getting more obese.

Why are you addressing this to me? I'm neither a gambler nor a fantasy sports player. As for sports being the cause of obesity, you have that backwards. Sports encourage fitness as well as teamwork. It's the computer world and sitting around writing blogs all day that leads to a lack of fitness and a disconnect from the real world.

I thought gambling was illegal? we are going to jeopardize the players right to privacy because people are doing illegal actions such as betting on the success (or failures) of sports teams? Sure, it happens just like everything else illegal. Doesn't mean we should allow such a violation of one's privacy all in the name of $$$.

Where would it stop? first, it would be limited to injures occurred on the field, then a player does some stupid dance move at a club and people are calling for all injures to be released. What about test results? is it the public's business that #99 on team whatever got a positive VD result back? Once a line as been crossed, it can't be undone.

Some states allow gambling (Las Vegas, Nevada for instance).

The NFL does not seem to be doing very well with its Brand. Yes, its number one, but their black-out policies, extreme expense, over-promotion on ESPN, and callous disregard of the fans is not a sustainable brand image.

The other day during a black out of a PRESEASON game between two Florida teams,. the local sports bar filled up with families and young people watching UFC. UFC is an aggressively marketed, well presented and up coming sports brand. The NFL is more for fat older guys.

Agreed. With even pre-season cost of $80 for nose bleed section seats and their fan base largly unemployed, we will see a lot more blackouts in the future.

i wish people would stop going to the games. I understand that the team employees thousands, and I apologize but if we were to all say, enough is enough and stop going, they would lower the price of tickets and food and then normal people could go and still have electricity for the month. 9 dollars for a soda is just wrong

The people of any sport have the right to medical privacy just like everybody else. What's going on here is the liberal media can't stand the fact that they can't force the information out of the people involved.

Yup. Too bad, right? the NFL, teams and players have no disclosure obligation like public companies. They should scheme and decoy opposing teams for strategy.

They play for entertainment, so the fans will decide.

People betting on the games or things like that don't need to know about his injury. Its his and the teams business, no one else's.

an overwhelming majority have an underlying problem getting worse from the day you are born. All now www.upcspine.com, and make an appointment with a U,C,S, only type of Chiropractor. practitioners in your area. We need them as part of our health care plan. Prevention should be emphasized for all ages, and I mean all ages. Must know how to recognize a U,C,S,and not get deceived by the diversifieds, and full spine body twisting upper back pushing neck twisting charlatans posing as U,C,S,. Traction does not help ether. That is as simple as I can say it.

WITHOUT PRIVACY THE OPPOSITION WOULD FOCUS ON A PLAYER'S INJURY TO THEIR ADVANTAGE. ONCE HE'S UNABLE TO PLAY IN A GAME(S), THE INJURY OR "COMPLAINT" BECOMES PUBLIC INFORMATION.

I can't imagine his coach is happy at all. What a bone head thing to do. Now every team on the Texans schedule know the full extent of Foster's injury and whether or not to prep for him or his back-up.

The coach can decide to bench any player he wants as well for strategy. Should that not be allowed so gamblers won't lose money?

I thought it was about the game. :)
