Fiona Apple has been a bad, bad girl. The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, 35, was arrested for hashish possession at a West Texas Border Patrol checkpoint, according to the Associated Press.

Apple "had a little tiny amount of pot and hash," sheriff's office spokesman Rusty Fleming told the AP, explaining that she spent Wednesday night in jail and was released Thursday after posting bail.

Police found about four grams of marijuana and about four grams of a substance that tested positive for hashish on the singer's tour bus, and she admitted the drugs were hers, the sheriff's office said in a press release.

Marijuana possession in small amounts is a misdemeanor, but the Texas Controlled Substance Act says possession of hashish -- a drug prepared with the resin of the marijuana plant -- in any quantity is a felony, according to the AP. Do you think being arrested for pot -- or hash -- is a big deal? Or is it all a big deal over nothing?

That's such idiotic nonsense. Honestly, decriminalize it now if you don't want to legalize it. People shouldn't have a criminal record for smoking a damn plant. Harms no one whatsoever and is none of the government's business.

how many deaths in our country can cannibis be tied to?
    send me links.
i think the reason most people answered "no" on this is because they understand how hypocritical laws are that allow alcohol and cigarettes, but not a substance that is less harmful and could potentially add millions to our nations economy.
the laws stand now because our elected officials are not listening to the majority but rather serving their own interests, as well as the alcohol industry, the tobacco industry, the building industry, the pharmaceutical industry etc....
this is not about any harm to society. its about money. Including police jobs and prison jobs.
stop and think about it objectively and you'll see it.

There is nothing wrong with smoking or selling pot. There is something wrong with the law, the prosecutors and the cops that enforce it. The prosecutors and cops are just like the gangsters who rob and kill.

What is a big deal, is the cops can set up random Check Points, operated the same as the Nazi's did with their Gestapo Check Points..

When I was a young man, the police needed a specific excuse to pull you over, and they could only write you up for the specific item they pulled you over for.

Not that long ago, the Courts allowed police to put up Sobriety Check Points, and they could only write DUI's to anyone they caught drinking and driving. Today those Check Points, are just revenue stops designed to pull random citizens over just to check to make sure they have their papers in order, and to see if the cops could find something-anything wrong that they can write a citation or make an arrest on.

Recently my City had one of those on a major road - - they checked every car passing over a 3 hour period. They called it a DUI Check Point.. yet they only wrote 2 DUI Tickets... and they wrote nearly 700 tickets for other violations, mostly Not presenting Insurance Card, Expired Plates, and mechanical violations like License Plate Light Fail.

    Your police state is here.

    Enjoy yourselves.

Sending people to jail in America is BIG BUSINESS so they make it a big deal. Prisons for profit are a big problem in "the land of the free". Let alone she got stopped at one of those Unconstitutional check points they have disguised as "border control" that are miles away from the border.

Celebrities and society has deemed pot as "cool", so we can tell our kids it is cool. You can toke it yourself anytime night or day and conduct your life with steady THC level all damn day.

Isn't it amazing that we hold so many others to high standards of sobriety, clear critical thinking and attention to intricate details, like in your doctor's office or operating room, your accountant, your children's teachers, bus drivers, restaurants, security firms, law enforcement, hazardous chemical workers. And we sue for the smallest things, but ofr us, it is "cut me a break". People come across the border with this stuff and use their guns on casual observers, those who are just near the action to make millions of dollars and you pot smokers just say "Okay!" For some it is a badge of pride to have been caught. For others it is a diploma for those who used and survived and walked away from the damaging effects of this and other drugs. Shamefully and sadly, some still don't get the message.

Well if you have an addictive personality, it's YOU that has the problem and YOU are right to walk away.

I know plenty of people who smoked weed for years and stopped abruptly with NO issues. Weed is nothing, get over it.

I can't when clinical damage is done. I know of many who stopped alcohol and weed and told their friends so and went on without incident until that one day. They are in and out of rehab like a dirt biker through mud. Weed is more than you imagine! or would you care to treat them for their problems?

Of course it's a big deal. It must suck having to deal with the law for
smoking a weed that grows well all over the planet.
It must suck getting busted for something less harmful than cigarettes
    and tobacco.

Lungs are for oxygen. I do not recommend putting any type of smoke into
your lungs. I do not smoke pot, but I believe Americans should be allowed
to smoke a plant if they want to.

We need to stop wasting money on a failed drug war that only makes
criminals richer. We will never arrest our way out of addiction.

You bet your bibby it is, especially in the Arab / Muslim world. Kind of makes one wonder why so many druggies are for obama when it is full intention to make us a Muslim, communist, racist nation.

the article doesn't mention Obama, Muslims, OR racism. So why is it you can't have a discussion about anything these days without some teabagger showing up trying to turn it into another political catfight? give it a rest. Please.

Well, I believe I only used it once. And I don't apply it to all Tea Party members, only the spammers like Golden Panther above who pop in with their mouths in high gear and their brains in neutral. It's a big deal that can stay with your for the rest of your life. It's also a pathetic and stupid law that needs to be repealed. Really what you do or put into your body is your business and the government has shown just how effective they are with the war on drugs anyhow. How much better off our country could be if we would focus on truly relevant things.

Along with "-tard", "Obot", "Republican't" and a Mack truck full of other chldish epithets that have all but supplanted real political dialog these days.

To be honest, my use of "teabagger" was unintentional. In the original version of my post I'd used "Tea Partier", but in a later edit "teabagger" slipped out of my fingertips and I didn't catch it.
