They call it "pre-drinking," "pre-partying" or "pre-funking," and it usually involves chugging cheap alcoholic drinks before heading out to a bar, club or sporting event.

While addiction experts estimate that 65% to 75% of college-age youths engage in such boozy behavior, a Swiss study concludes that such "pre-loaded" evenings are far more likely to end in blackouts, unprotected sex, unplanned drug use or injury.

I don't drink anymore but I did do that so I wouldn't have to buy too many overpriced watered down drinks at the bar.

We call it pre-drinks or just pre's here. I don't go out much. I'd rather stay home and drink ;)

I don't do it much now, but I did in the late 70's, all of the 80's, and some of the 90's. Back then we called it "getting drunk".

I don't drink to get drunk, and I have never been drunk, and I plan not to ever get drunk! Why on earth would I do that? I do enough weird crap that I remember!

When I used to go out, my friend's and I would drink some before we went to the clubs. It saves you money. You don't have to buy as many drinks at the clubs then.

Not old enough... but seems like a dumb and dangerous idea.

It's one thing to save money but wouldn't it just be a better idea to, oh I dunno, drink at your own place or your friends' place? Maybe get something cheap to enjoy or all pitch in to split the otherwise expensive price of something more quality?

Not to mention if you get too eff'd up, you'll have a couch to crash on...

    Just a thought.

Oh, you kids today! When I was young, we didn't have names or phrases for all this stuff, like "pre-funking," "pre-partying," etc. We just hung out somewhere, at someone's house, or maybe cruised around in a gas guzzling vehicle, fueled by 36 cents a gallon gas ... we all chipped in a quarter or 50 cents for gas and were good for the whole night ... put on a little buzz either way, then later, we hit the bars and the clubs.

    The good old days. :-)

But I can see how that would be cheaper than getting buzzed in the bar. Most of the time you can buy a pint/500ml bottle for the price of a single drink in the bar/club.

I used to, but not since I got sober more than 16 years ago. I'm not anti-drinking, not at all. I can still go to a bar with friends and drink tonic with lemon, and have a great time without craving alcohol. There's nothing wrong with alcohol, unless you're alcoholic. "Pre-funking" is done by every alcoholic. Now whether all "pre-funkers" are alcoholics is not my call to make. But it's a bad sign.

I have never heard of "pre-funking." We call it pregaming, but to each their own. We also don't chug cheap alcohol before we go out, we just drink at a leisurely pace and socialize before going to a crowded, loud, overpriced bar.
Why waste money when you can have more face time with friends and save at the same time!

I did that in my 20's. But I didn't binge drink, I just had a few drinks with friends before going out.

You use to only have to worry about the drunks when the bars closed, now they go drunk, endangering people coming and going. Sheesh!

I'm not 19 yet so when I get the chance to go to a bar/ club on a 17+ night , I drink before hand and then usually someone ends up buying me drinks. Oddly these are usually the nights I am the least drunk.

when we tailgate, we drink plenty before the game starts so we don't have to buy $8.50 beer during the game.

also, back in the days when i used to hit the clubs, we'd load up before we left the house, much cheaper than buying a bunch of drinks at the club.
