Failed Reality Spinoffs: Which Was the Worst?

There are two words in television that can evoke pained groans at their mere utterance: "reality" and "spinoff." So it should come as no surprise that the "reality spinoff" genre is ripe with failure. As if "Jersey Shore" wasn't bad enough already, MTV had to go and produce "The Pauly D Project" based on the thrilling personal life of one of the show's stars. Needless to say, it flopped.

pauly d project pauly d

Yahoo! pointed out four more reality spinoff fails (is that redundant?), each more boring than the last. And when we say boring, we don't mean "causing or marked by boredom." We mean "hollowing out, cutting through, or removing a core of material." There were two "Project Runway" spinoffs ("Models of the Runway" and "Mad Fashion"); "RuPaul's Drag U," a "Drag Race" spinoff; and "It's a Brad, Brad World," a spinoff of "The Rachel Zoe Project," whatever that is. They all died on impact. Obviously.

And if that's not enough, Yahoo! also reports upcoming spinoffs for "Toddlers and Tiaras" and "Dance Mom," two shows already better known for the controversial parenting depicted therein than for their "entertainment value." We can't wait.

Every single one of them. I hate reality TV shows. They're lame and shallow.

I have to pick "all of the above" because (luckily for me, I suppose) I have never seen one minute of these shows. But if these are "reality" shows then I'm glad I missed them. I have yet to see a "reality show" that came within a mile of reality.
It kind of says something about us as a society, though.

I don't watch "reality" shows; have no time for that crap. I watch shows about reality (like documentaries and stuff).

I spend about half of my time watching the Science Channel, and the rest watching news, information and science fiction. And I think science fiction is probably closer to reality than reality shows.

Quite the problem. Pop in a Star Wars or Star Trek (or maybe a Doctor Who) Blu-Ray on the old 47", or watch "Jersey Shore"....hmmm. Decisions, decisions.

I think you're probably right about there being more reality in scifi than in "reality" shows. lol
Yeah, NatGeo, Science, Nova, etc. are all waaaaaaay more interesting than that other crap.

TV shows that educate are more valuable than "reality" shows, which ain't reality at all.

I have two opinions on this (as always). "reality" shows seem to generally show the worst of people, and for some unfathomable reason. that's popular and we like that. I suspect we want to look down on people because that makes us feel good about our own lives. It's like, we want to look at the lives of a lot of vacuous, hedonistic (or stupid people in general) because then feel superior to them (like shows about people who have problems with parking garages) and our own lives are somehow made better than theirs.

But REAL reality shows, and it doesn't always have to be science-related, are not as popular. That seems to me to be because we have gotten to the point that we don't WANT to be more educated than we already are. We (and I certainly don't mean you) have been convinced that educated people are somehow "elitist" and we're better then them (check some of Rick Santorum's comments about college). And the bottom line is we don't need college to be intelligent. But we sometimes think stupid is admirable?

And, okay, three opinions, we may be just burned out with the issues of the day and we need some escape. Other than that, I see no good reason to be so devoted to clowns that some T...

Has anybody in theior audiences ever asked themselves why they have made these shows so popular? Aren't these the same people you wouldn't have anything to do with in real life? Is "Uncle Bob", the person nobody in the family wants to talk to, beuase he's just such a jerk somehow better then you when they're on TV?

Your hypotheses may be quite accurate. I'd bet in some cases they are conclusively accurate. I think not many people actually analyze why they di things, why they like certain things and not others, etc. Or else perhaps they do analyze to a small extent but then don't like the results so instead of repairing what they see is amiss, they stuff it on a shelf in the background and ignore it.

That's a good way to phrase it. If they don't like something, or if it makes them uncomfortable, they ignore it.
There's a world of information out there that never existed even in our parent's generation, and much of it is not at all good news. 24/7 news/talk, 500 cable channels and the Internet may simply be too much for us and technology might have overwhelmed our ability to digest it all. We CAN'T analyze it all and for our own self-preservation we block it out.

But, then again, we've had sensationalism, "yellow" journalism, bigotry (not just racial) rumor and innuendo pushed by others for a long time before you and I were born, so maybe this is just as good as we get.

I can't believe that a liar and a cheat can get a spin off. Brad is a disgusting, ego maniac and I can't wait until Bravo realizes that as well.
Also, I agree, all the spin offs are disgusting, not to mention the program that they spun off of.

It is shocking that Universities would pay this 'thing' to speak at their campuses. Rutgers University paid her 32k to give a speech and life and partying. That is where your tuition goes..... I dont think we can call it higher education anymore.
