Physcis teaches that it comes down to the spectrum of visible light which is interpreted by the retina in our eyes. Sunlight (ie. white light) is actually a combination of all the light in the spectrum (visble via a prism). The reason that we intrept the sky to be blue is from a selective scattering of these colors to create a blue effect.
Of the visible frequenceis in sunlight, violent is scattered most by nitrogen and oxyegen in the atmosphere. Follwed by blue, green,yellow orange and red. Red is scattered only a 10th as much as violet, Although violet light is scattred more than blue, our eyes are not very sensitive to violet light.
Therefore, blue scsttered light is what predominates our vision. Certain atmospheric conditions (smog etc) disrupt this further creating any number of color combinations (red sunsets, etc)
