Charlie Sheen's strange speech

Sheen wished the cast of "Two and Half Men" well as a "surprise" presenter -- and we didn't buy one word of it.

  2. The opening number

    The opening number

As host Jane Lynch herself put it, the musical opening mostly felt "stupid and schlocky and overly long."

  3. The Lonely Island's performance

    The Lonely Island's performance

Maybe we're old-fashioned, but we were kind of creeped out by The Lonely Island's performance of "3-Way (The Golden Rule)" and "I Just Had Sex." So much for family-friendly primetime.

  4. The Emmytones

    The Emmytones

How did the Emmys manage to convince Joel McHale to join faux doo-wop group the Emmytones? Same way they got James Franco to host the Oscars, we suppose.

  5. Steve Carell snubbed

    Steve Carell snubbed

Carell has been nominated for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series every year since 2006 for "The Office" and he’s never won. This was his last chance (somebody really likes Jim Parsons).

  6. Jane Lynch's gratuitous TomKat joke

    Jane Lynch's gratuitous TomKat joke

Lynch's TomKat quip felt kind of dated and needlessly mean: "Katie Holmes is in the house as well. I'd love to say something funny about her, but I'm afraid of her husband." Pick on someone your own size, Jane.

  7. 'The Amazing Race' wins ... again

'The Amazing Race' wins ... again

The "Amazing Race" has won Best Reality Television Series every year except 2010. Does anyone still watch that show?

  8. Forgetting Jeff Conaway

    Forgetting Jeff Conaway

Whoops! The Emmys forgot to remember the late "Taxi" star in its annual "In Memoriam" montage. They also skipped Seinfeld's Uncle Leo.

The 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards aired last night, and the nicest thing we can think to say is: They weren't nearly as bad as the Oscars.

Jane Lynch was mostly warm and likable as the host, even if her joke at Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' expense was a little dated (better to save the zingers for "mean" comedians like Ricky Gervais).

But as usual with awards shows, a lot of Lynch's material was corny at best and flat at worst. Take her musical opening number, for example. There were some funny parts mixed in, but as Lynch herself put it, it mostly felt "stupid and schlocky and overly long."

And even the "surprise" moments felt very scripted. Charlie Sheen appeared as a surprise presenter to wish the cast of "Two and a Half Men" well -- and we didn't buy one word of it.

"From the bottom of my heart, I wish you nothing but the best for this upcoming season," he said, addressing the show's cast and crew. "I know you will continue to make great television."

Despite some carefully placed dramatic pauses, the moment was so humorless -- and such a drastic turnaround from Sheen's recent behavior -- that it came off as insincere.

And maybe we're old-fashioned, but we were kind of creeped out by The Lonely Island's performance of "3-Way (The Golden Rule)" and "I Just Had Sex," which were nominated for Original Song Emmys. Does anyone care that there are kids watching this show?

It is really difficult for me to judge, since the sound was out on my DVR. I mostly watch to see the women's gowns anyway. Of course one of the things I regretted not being able to hear was Charlie's speech. No matter what he said, his mere appearance on a night to celebrate primetime TV is a groaner. But I thank you for the opportunity to hear it here.

It seems the Emmy producers got mixed up and thought they were producing The Tony Awards...Enough with the Staged musical numbers! The Lonely Island number was not even remotely for family viewing, but the producers really didn't give a f%^+ and kept it in the line up anyway. The whole Emmy production was corny and overdone. Jane Lynch was the least of their problems.

Why wasn't there a choice for ALL OF THE ABOVE? I don't watch awards shows, because 99% of ALL of them are, IMO, groan-worthy. The only reason I chose the musical opening number at last night Emmy Awards fete is because they always suck, and the tricks that the producers of this schlock put their hosts through is more sad than irritating. The forced spontaneity, the lame humor, the uncomfortable silences, the over-produced musical numbers, the crapulous "special" appearances, the mutual suckfests among the participants -- ALL are a part of EVERY awards show, and the Emmy Awards were no exception. I'm ashamed of Joel McHale for participating in that stupid "Emmytones" number, and I hope he redeems himself by making fun of it on "The Soup" Friday night.

I was going to say Charlie's speech, but then I saw this on the list! I didn't even realize they forgot him.
Now all I can say is "aww, man. That ain't right!"
