Elvis to Get Hologram Treatment: Great Trend or Just Wrong?

Elvis impersonators should be shaking in their boots! The true King of Rock and Roll will be joining the ranks of Tupac, MJ, and Marilyn and will be making a comeback in holographic form.

Digital Domain Media Group, the company behind the Tupac Shakur hologram, announced this week that it is planning to virtually resurrect Elvis Presley across a variety of platforms—movies, television, concerts, etc.

“Elvis Presley is the king of rock and roll . . . you have to start with the king,” Ed Ulbrich, Chief Creative Officer at Digital Domain told MTV News this week. “We’re in the creative development stages now. Instead of a single application we’re looking to bring Elvis back across a host of platforms, including live concerts in venues.”

The Elvis hologram may end up being amazing, but this announcement got us wondering whether this trend is really a good idea.

Will holograms be the end of live impersonators? Why should we watch movies or television shows about Marilyn when we can just go see her “live”? Shouldn’t the dead be allowed to rest in peace?

What do you think SodaHeads? Are holographic performers a great trend or just wrong?

Elvis is the best. I'd pay to go and see a hologram of him considering he died before I and so many of his other fans were born. Plus he didn't tour outside of the United states and miraculously managed to reach the level he did. Unlike Jackson and Tupac and the likes of them, Elvis did it all without having to tour outside the United States of America.

I think it's an interesting idea. They've been having holograms in Japan for quite a while now, the only difference is they make holograms of animes while we make holograms of dead artists.

and boring. Are the "artists" so pathetic nowadays that we have to resurrect the dead? Hollyweird can't produce originals anymore.

I'd check it out. But, I think it's a fad. They'll do Elvis & some other classic acts. But, eventually it'll come down to one hit wonders and then it'll be over.

I think the dead should be allowed to rest in peace. Of course, where there is money to be made, that trumps everything, right?

Only if it is not for profit.
It's wrong to milk money off of the deceased but if people are just doing it for the love of music, this is great.
  • AngelaDuke 2012/06/11 07:46:20

Just another scheme to make money off the deceased. They don't have to pay the performers and get to keep all the money for themselves. If it was free or just cost of production I'd say it was a great way to honor them but i highly doubt that is the case.

This trend is just a representation of the loss of original content in media. Every other movie, games, or even music are reboots/remakes/remastered
are having to reuse material from years ago. Look at star wars they have a new rerelease for every other day of the year. In point indviduals need to think of new content or great remakes that don't delve into source content but use it as inspiration for bigger and better things. 1 example is the new reboot: My Little Pony Friendship is Magic (Brony out)

Hopefully, if there are live concerts, they will be able to have him age as the concert progresses. So, you get the young hip shaking Elvis at the beginning, the "fat" jump suit Elvis at the end, and everything in between.
  • Wolverineland 2012/06/11 05:16:10

Not wrong because its creepy but just wrong to milk money out of a dead performer in the form of concert tickets.
