Elvis' Dirty Underwear Goes Up for Auction: Are Bidders Loyal Fans or Freaks?

A pair of Elvis Presley's underwear will go up for auction next month in England and the product is expected to make around $16,000. That, in itself, is a little strange... but the worse part about it is that this particular pair hasn't been washed since he wore and stained them. In 1977. Pretty gross if you ask me. Are the bidders who are interested super-fans... or just freaks?

ROLLINGSTONE.COM reports:
A pair of Elvis Presley's underwear, complete with stains, will be sold at an auction in Manchester, England, next month, the BBC reports.

The legend that is Elvis will never go away. I personally wouldn't buy them, but I understand why others would and am okay with it.

Depends. (No pun intended). Would this be the hot 1950's Elvis, or the portly 1975 model Elvis whom stained his bloomers after eating yet another mustard chocolate crustacean minced with garlic and fat entrails from a t-bone steak? Hard question to answer either way, really.

that's nasty. loyal fans would go for an autographed guitar or something, but this is just going too far. what are going to do with it, hang it on the wall to look at it? wow, what's the fun in that? some people are just too obsessed with celebrities, ok, he was a great rockstar, but that doesn't mean u have to buy his dirty laundry. just get an autographed picture or guitar like everyone else.

The only thing Elvis's or anyone elses old underwear is good for is cleaning dirt and
grease off of automobiles and machinery. Is it really neccessary, especially in this depressed economy to blow sixteen grand plus on a dirt and grease rag?

After all these years since his death, they are really dirty underwear. How do we know they were really Elvis' after all?
    Nuts, just plain nuts.
  • Dr_Stoppit gaylehelen 2012/08/30 13:31:36

Exactly. They're most likely not even his. I mean, where did the seller supposedly access used underwear owned by the King Of Rock?

The paramedics took him to Baptist Memorial hospital the afternoon he died. When family and friends at home (Graceland) received the shocking call saying it had been too late, there were a few people that went through the house looting whatever they could.
There was a very interesting thread about it on an Elvis site where I'm a member. A lot of jewellry and stuff just disappeared that chaotic summer afternoon. Dirty underwear??
I doubt anybody was remotely interested in that.

Sad to see what happens as soon as someone, especially with his fame, dies. It really can bring out the worst in people.
Thanks for the reply. Much appreciated.

    DIS GUS TING.!! Yuck!!

What is wrong with some folks? Really? This is like coveting the dirty used retainer or a used tissue of some famous person.

    Beyond stupidity.

Edit: Ok, let's get in the ridiculous zone with these sickos for a minute. How you gonna verify it's the real article? DNA testing?

BTW, who first decided it was a good idea to pick these up off the bathroom floor and save them for future exploitation in the first place?

That is a good point. I didn't think of it from the standpoint of what Elvis might have wanted.

All the more reason these lowlifes should simply give it up on the skivvies.

Actually these would be very loyal "freaks" who hopefully have access to a washing machine, IMO this is just too gross to imagine.

It's from a very famous icon, anything that was worn or used by someone rememberable and famous is highly collectible and wanted.

I think they are very loyal to Elvis for considering buying this. I do wonder, however, why they would go for 16,000??

Nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to collectibles and celebrities. One things for sure.. these skivvies have been worn! Can you imagine.. $16K. And authenticating can't be difficult.. lots of DNA there!

Why on earth would anyone of sound mind want somebody else's dirty underwear? It beggars belief. Besides, how does anybody know for certain that it was Elvis who wore and soiled them?
