The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts named daytime talk show host Ellen DeGeneres this year's recipient of the country's top prize for humor, the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, adding her name to an elite list of American comedians that includes Richard Pryor, Bob Newhart, Lorne Michaels, and George Carlin. Though DeGeneres is probably best known for her Emmy-winning talk show, her stand-up has been highly praised. She's also hosted the Oscars and the Primetime Emmys, and played the voice of Dory on "Finding Nemo."

Though she's sometimes perceived as a political comedian because she was the first lead character on prime-time television to reveal that she was gay, she once said, "When I'm accused of becoming political, I'm showing love. How is that political to teach love and acceptance?" Executive producer for the Mark Twain Prize show Cappy McGarr explained, "She's not just a comedian. She's really a miracle worker. She got the president to dance, the first lady to do pushups and Tom Delay to laugh." Do you think Ellen DeGeneres is funny?

she is funny, but any one else delivering the same lines would not be funny. it's her timing, and her looks, and her emotions that come through that make what she says funny.

I find fewer and fewer 'comedians' as being funny anymore, especially Degeneres, Maher, Garofalo, ... to name a few. Degeneres might have been funny at one time but those days are gone. Degeneres, thankfully, hasn't shown us a hateful side but others are so hateful now. Their 'funny' is pure hatefulness for anyone they disagree with.

The people giving these awards may be a bit biased towards political correctness; the gay woman thing, etc.......

My minimal exposure to her has not given me anything humorous to think about. If I want something funny to view, It won't be watching Ellen.

I first saw her in a TV show called 'Duet'. She was a ditzy receptionist character that wasn't funny then and her humor has never changed. It's very dry. I like the woman personally, I just don't think she's terribly funny.

How can anyone find her funny. I could understand if 2% of 51% voted yes as they are always pushing their agenda. She is one of the least funny people I have ever heard. Then again she comes from a country that needs to insert canned laughter in comedies so the idiots know when to laugh. I swear some Seppo's will need prompting to breathe in the not too distant future.

And as far as being a dyed-in-the-wool liberal, she sure has her heart set on the US military family. I salute her for that. She is about the only liberal celebrity in the Nation that doesn't just give lip service to the military members and they're families.

I wish the world was loaded with people who have the heart, the soul and the talent Ms. Degeneres does.
