The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts named daytime talk show host Ellen DeGeneres this year's recipient of the country's top prize for humor, the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, adding her name to an elite list of American comedians that includes Richard Pryor, Bob Newhart, Lorne Michaels, and George Carlin. Though DeGeneres is probably best known for her Emmy-winning talk show, her stand-up has been highly praised. She's also hosted the Oscars and the Primetime Emmys, and played the voice of Dory on "Finding Nemo."

Though she's sometimes perceived as a political comedian because she was the first lead character on prime-time television to reveal that she was gay, she once said, "When I'm accused of becoming political, I'm showing love. How is that political to teach love and acceptance?" Executive producer for the Mark Twain Prize show Cappy McGarr explained, "She's not just a comedian. She's really a miracle worker. She got the president to dance, the first lady to do pushups and Tom Delay to laugh." Do you think Ellen DeGeneres is funny?

You have got to be joking. I have never liked her. She is up there with a few others that laugh at their own jokes especially when no one else does, takes credit for a popular show(when the rest of the cast are responsible for the success), rather than doing it on their own, & then sucking up to whoever necessary, to remain popular.

I think she's got a great sense of humor. It's always great when she can make these really stoic or important people laugh and be genuine about it.

People saying she's a dyke: does she make a joke about being gay every single show? No? Than who cares? Also, her humor isn't the "disturbing" kind, the kind that's sort of funny but REALLY gross (like Tosh.0) which I can't stand.

I just don't believe she is funny..nothing more nothing less. I watch Ellen and her stand-up
sometimes.I just can't remember the last time she had me laughing at any of her jokes. this does not reflect her as a person, just not my type of comedian.

I don't watch shows like Ellen, but I will say that Ellen comes across as genuinely pleasant and down to Earth with a good sense of humor. Whether she is like that away from the camera, only those who know can say for sure.

She is not "in your face" about her sexual orientation. Doesn't make a secret of it but also doesn't blow it all out of proportion either. In the meantime, her humor is always up to date and -- gasp -- clean. I don't sit on the edge of my seat anticipating something horrible coming out of her mouth like happens in so many instances with comedians today. In any event, I like her.
