Ellen DeGeneres Wins Mark Twain Prize for American Humor: Do You Think She's Funny?

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts named daytime talk show host Ellen DeGeneres this year's recipient of the country's top prize for humor, the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, adding her name to an elite list of American comedians that includes Richard Pryor, Bob Newhart, Lorne Michaels, and George Carlin. Though DeGeneres is probably best known for her Emmy-winning talk show, her stand-up has been highly praised. She's also hosted the Oscars and the Primetime Emmys, and played the voice of Dory on "Finding Nemo."

Though she's sometimes perceived as a political comedian because she was the first lead character on prime-time television to reveal that she was gay, she once said, "When I'm accused of becoming political, I'm showing love. How is that political to teach love and acceptance?" Executive producer for the Mark Twain Prize show Cappy McGarr explained, "She's not just a comedian. She's really a miracle worker. She got the president to dance, the first lady to do pushups and Tom Delay to laugh." Do you think Ellen DeGeneres is funny?

She has been one of my favorite stand up comediennes for a long time, I wish she did more stand up comedy. I don't watch her television show so I don't know how funny she is on it.

She tries to be funny, but all she does is be rude. She has no respect for people's personal boundaries and her humour is very crude. She doesn't let things go, she has no respect for the people she interviews. I'm not saying interviews have to be formal all the time, the best shows aren't like that, but she can still have respect for people. Jonathan Ross is AMAZING. He's so like her in that he has a laugh, and everything is quite relaxed, but he always has the utmost respect for his guests. He also doesn't feel the need to jump out at people to get a laugh, his humour is more intelligent, bringing up things people have just mentioned to bite them in the rear, but in a good natured way because he'd never disrespect someone on his show. Graham Norton's show is COMPLETELY relaxed, they all just lounge about on a couch, and yet they're all funny and have a laugh together and it's really sweet, he doesn't try to find out the most about their personal lives and push them for information they don't want to share. Celebrities are people, too. They deserve personal lives, and Ellen doesn't seem to appreciate any of that, which just really annoys me.

    She is “Milk-Toast”.

I guess I am old fashion about my feelings, but I can't get past the fact that she is a lesbian and plays the male role in her partnership. Notice: I did not say marriage.

I try to tolerate homosexuality and gays having all rights as all heterosexual people, but can't keep from believing this won’t stop with legality about gay marriages. I think soon that homosexuals will stay after it until they have more legal, civil laws and rights protecting and enhancing them than the rest of the general heterosexual population.

Yes I know, you’re thinking if you’re reading this that I am a homophobic. But yes, I am after seeing the courts, governments, and most of the heterosexual population bending over backwards to be PC because they mostly think it’s COOL, and could care less about homosexuals and their rights, and are horrified to be called a bigot, or homophobic or any other name that will make them look like they are stupid, ignorant and without modern thinking intelligentsia.

    That's why I don't think she’s funny.
However, all three of my grown daughters and mothers of our 7 grand children think she is hilarious.

So,… there’s my dinosaur mind, what do I know?
The rest of it we’ll see how the "change" goes down in maybe the next decade.

Maybe the government and all the PC population should make marriage, "a bond between a Man and a Woman” illegal, and re-name the whole heterosexual and homosexual partnership to another name.

I don't see how her orientation has anything to do with her sense of humor?

You're over thinking this, just because people are no longer turning a blind eye to the abuse that many people face simply because they are homosexual, does not mean anyone is getting any special rights.

Special Rights? Not yet, stay tuned for about 5 to 7 more years.
Hell, .. they (gays) can all get hooked legally for all I care, but they are not satisfied with a compromise on the legal name NOT being called MARRIGE. They vehemently challenge this, and the scriptures saying that a marriage is a bond between a MAN and a WOMAN.

What ones religion says about marriage only applies to those who follow that certain religion. I don't believe in any place being forced to perform any weddings or marriage they don't agree to, which means if any religious institutions don't want to perform wedding ceremonies then that is up to them. However I think there are legal injustices with the current system.

I am mostly in agreement with you.
I hope the marriage think with homosexuals turns out good for them and for people that are offended by it right now.

Time heals a lot of things with normal thinking people no matter their sexual orientations.

You are so right. Her sexual orientation is no one's business and has nothing to do with her incredible talent and humor. She is fabulous! People need to mind their own lives and not worry about other people.

You are maybe too young to know what your talking about.

You may be right in YOUR way of thinking, but that is simply, UNTIL they (anyone) wants to make their business everyone else’s business.

That happens all the time when you’re demanding LAWS be changed for you.
Gays can get hooked legally if they want, I really don’t care, but it does offend many people and religious scripture using the NAME (marriage).

Look down through history at the number of people and nations that said this is none of our business, … then wrath set in and ugly things started happening to them. because they turned their heads away.

All things happing around you ARE your business.

You may be too young to know this NOW.

My post about her was just an honest statement from me. I said I want ALL humans to have all the rights as all other humans, but some people and organizations I don't trust, one example, our government in the last 2-3 decades.
