Eli Roth’s Green Inferno: Could It Be Cannibals?

After a long hiatus spent acting, writing and producing, Eli Roth (Hostel) is to finally return to the director’s chair with a horror-thriller film entitled Green Inferno.

The plot is being kept under tight wraps and all that Roth has to say
is that it was inspired by his time filming in Chile, and that it will
be ”daring and terrifying”. That leaves us with only the enigmatic title
to speculate about.

Yet the writers at Screen Crush have already pieced together a very interesting theory. Green Inferno, they point out, was an alternate title for Natura Contro, known as Cannibal Holocaust 2
in the States. An ’80s cannibal horror movie set in the Amazon, it’s
widely known as the film that ended the genre, but has a huge cult
following amongst die-hard-horror fans.

Roth is very clear that Green Inferno is an original idea of
his, so we can be sure that it won’t be a remake, but could the title
be a humorous nod to the killer of the cannibal genre as Roth attempts
to revive it? We know that he’s a fan of the film because there are
photos of him wearing a “Cannibal Holocaust” t-shirt. Add all this to
the fact that the film is to be shot in Peru, home to a large percentage
of the Amazon rainforest, and the theory starts to look very compelling
indeed… Emma Geen
