When you hear the term "rock star" you probably think of musicians like Dave Grohl, Slash, Ozzy Osbourne, Bruce Springsteen or Joan Jett. However, this year, MTV News has declared Rihanna the "Rock Star of the Year." Not quite what you expected, right?

Although Rihanna doesn't write or perform rock music, MTV has its reasons. They explain, "Hers was a year of audacious attitude, salacious singles, extreme excess and downright defiant deeds...she did what she wanted, with whomever she wanted, and didn't give a single, solitary f--- about any of it."

While all this is true, is that what makes a rock star? Is attitude (in this case defending physical abuse and Instagram-ing nude pictures of yourself) something to celebrate? Or is being a "rock star" more about how hard you actually rock? Time to discuss, SodaHeads.

...but then who'd have thought Nicole pussycatdoll or Fergie blackeyedpea had such great voices as demonstrated by guest vocals on Slash's album? Rihanna could be good, great even with the right material but right now is struggling to make average...

I do think Fergie did a FANTASTIC job with Slash. Definitely surprised me.

I like Rihanna, I really do. I've seen her music transition throughout her career and she's pretty great. But, honestly, she's not a rock star at all. She sings pop and rap, and sings them well. Calling her a rock star for one song is like labeling the Beatles as Japanese Pop because they had Yoko Ono.

She's one of my favorite pop stars. I like that she's edgy. But I'm a rocker, and she is not. The music world really needs to stop insulting and overlooking true rockstars to promote pop stars. They're losing credibility in the rock world. Pop stars shouldn't be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Grammys shouldn't all go to people who just wiggle to synthesizers, I want to see real bands playing real instruments. That's rock & roll!! Rockers are finding new venues like Golden Gods, etc. So get a clue -- if it doesn't rock & roll, it ain't a rockstar!!

Drinking too much and running around scantily clad makes you a rock star? Then spring break must be a congregation of rock stars. Rihanna is just a corporate puppy trying to live up to a certain image, namely the "bad girl".

I've seen her pictorials in FHM Esquire GQ magazines wearing not very much and she just ain't sexy at all. Nice face, potentially great figure (petite) but ruined by the tattoo on her chest, ugly and an instant turn off for many. there are other pop stars ink free far nicer to look at and listen to.
