I practice martial arts and I think it does count as a sport. I mean, people compete in this and win lots of very honored awards.
sparring should definitely count...you're wearing gear like a football player, you're kicking like in soccer, and punching...like...idk lol...i just think it should count if you are active. I mean seriously, if golf counts as a sport, then so should martial arts.
but, a lot of people disagree with me and say that martial arts is just a hobby, not a sport.

If boxing and gymnatics count as sports then the martial art could easily work as a sport for not just just sparring (kumite) but also forms (katas).

Both Tae Kwon Do and Judo wouldn't have been in the World Olympics. If it wasn't classified as a sport.

its athletic as anything else, it requires stamina, strength, agility, flexibility, mental toughness, as well as being able to get hurt and stand your ground, it fits every category of skill that you would need for any sport

The art or craft is if you will was not to be a sport. Sports was some that was to be fun peacefull--- What you see today is nothing from what I have read today the tv calls it a sport a lie or twisted truth it overly glorifies the reason for it, something that was a defense to sop harm ....or death to stop a attacker from doing one harm...

I see your point but there's so many competitions out there which make martial arts valid as a sport, in my opinion.

Tae Kwon Do has morphed into an Olympic Sport, following Judo. I found it a little disconcerting because I began TKD when it was more traditional. Later, when I changed schools, it had been established AAU and the training in many schools was focused on winning tournaments and flashy demos. I eventually just changed styles (Kuk Sool Won).

Basically Korean Ju-Jitsu, if memory serves?

I haven't studied martial arts in years. I can't wait until time/money allow me to do it again.

Sort of (I never studied Ju-Jitsu). Korean Royal Martial Art. It's softer than TKD, still retains some kicks, with joint lock take downs, pressure points and weapons. I found it easier on my body and enjoyed learning how to take a fall. I'm in the same boat, time/money made it difficult to continue. There are no Kuk Sool Won schools in NYC, but I'm considering giving up my gym membership to study akido.

Kuk Sool Won sounds cool. A nice blend of stand up and ground fighting.

good luck with Aikido. I understand it takes a long time before you can defend yourself with it. but, that shouldn't be a problem with your previous experience.

If u want a simple and quicker style of aikido check out the Serbian style called "Real Aikido." Its far more aggressive than traditional Aikido though.

You can make a sport from martial arts, but martial arts is a defense mechanism

Not just a defense mechanism. It is also a way of cleanse the mind thru physical means.
