Does Canceling A Concert Make a Political Statement?

SodaHead Music 2010/06/07 22:00:00
Yes, musicians can have a strong voice if they choose to and their fans pay attention when shows are canceled.
No, people go to concerts for the music, not the politics.

Like forcing a candidate to stop using your song in a campaign, canceling a concert has long been the fall-back tactic for musical acts looking to make a statement.

Just ask the fine folks of Arizona, who’ve been hit with a rash of sudden cancellations (Hall & Oates, Los Lobos, etc.) over the state’s new immigration law. And it’s not just domestic issues that are drawing cancellation. Revered punk band the Pixies have called off what was to be their first performance in Israel, a June 9 gig in Tel Aviv, over what they are calling “events beyond our control.”

Though the band, which has never taken much of a political stance, are not talking, the organizers of the Pic.Nic festival said the cancellation was in response to Israel’s deadly raid on a Gaza-bound humanitarian aid flotilla last week. The Pixies had reportedly been sent letter by human rights groups before last week’s incident urging them to cancel their appearance over Israel’s policies regarding Palestinians.

The Pixies pull-out came a month after Elvis Costello yanked two of his Holy Land gigs because he feared the shows could be “interpreted as a political act.”

Screw Hall and Oates. They probably didn't sell many tickets there, and are cancelling just to save face. As for Los Lobos, all their fans have to leave now anyway.

#1) Concerts are for the fans. When I decide to play a show, where does the money come from? The fans! If I start canceling too many concerts then my fans will abandon me most of the time (although if I'm lucky they still will buy my old stuff). #2) When an artist isn't selling well what do they usually do to survive? They tour. Well cancel too many concerts and you ruin that and it might cost you your career. Bands can have political views but music is a buissiness. Express your political views by doing a show with protest tees and doing protest songs (be careful though to keep the political thing subtley and don't overdo it).

yes musicians sometimes cancel shows to make a point, and in some cases it works and in others it doesn't. However, this is a two-way street. Politicians and politically active groups have also canceled some bands' performances due to differences in political or ideological beliefs. so in my opinion, politics and entertainment have been intertwined for a long time now, and this is really nothing new.

When I spend hard earned money, I don't want some pampered spoiled entertainer to tell me what to think. Most of them are far less educated and more out of touch than the average wage earner. I am very disappointed by Hall and Oates, who obviously are pandering to their entertainment pals over the reality of the Americans who have to live with it every day.

Ridiculous. When has anybody gone to a concert because of politics? When I went to a concert a few months ago, was I thinking anything political? No, I was thinking "OH MY GOD THIS IS AWESOME!"

If the performers politics are more important than the performance he should be running for office. I would permanently boycott any performer who canceled a performance for political reasons, whether I agreed with him or not.

Elton John was willing to perform at Rush Limbaugh's wedding. The price was a million bucks. Rush inadverdently proved a point that every liberal has his or her price.

...be a two edged sword , while the musican/ band can have thier political say now, they maybe alienating fans and banning themselves from future engagements at that venue/ country. A musican/ band will not always be on "top".

Freedom of speech means the freedom to *not* speak (or sing). If they pay whatever fee for a broken contract costs then they have every right to cancel a concert. They also have every right to say -- or not say why. Whether they don't like something the host country is doing or because their drummer got poison ivy where she used the wrong plant leaves as toilet paper. You can't *make* them perform.
