Does Canceling A Concert Make a Political Statement?

Like forcing a candidate to stop using your song in a campaign, canceling a concert has long been the fall-back tactic for musical acts looking to make a statement.
Just ask the fine folks of Arizona, who’ve been hit with a rash of sudden cancellations (Hall & Oates, Los Lobos, etc.) over the state’s new immigration law. And it’s not just domestic issues that are drawing cancellation. Revered punk band the Pixies have called off what was to be their first performance in Israel, a June 9 gig in Tel Aviv, over what they are calling “events beyond our control.”
Though the band, which has never taken much of a political stance, are not talking, the organizers of the Pic.Nic festival said the cancellation was in response to Israel’s deadly raid on a Gaza-bound humanitarian aid flotilla last week. The Pixies had reportedly been sent letter by human rights groups before last week’s incident urging them to cancel their appearance over Israel’s policies regarding Palestinians.
The Pixies pull-out came a month after Elvis Costello yanked two of his Holy Land gigs because he feared the shows could be “interpreted as a political act.”
