Grammy Awards Lose the Remaining Credibility They Had

With Beyonce winning more Grammys in 1 night than any other female artist in history, the awards have finally lost whatever remaining credibility they had

Consider the women who Beyonce has bested. They include: Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, Sade, Patti Labelle, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Mariah Carey, and Chaka Khan. Pity.

PS: This is not entirely the fault of the Grammys. It is also a reflection of the absolutely bankrupt state of the contemporary pop/r&b; music scene.

Update: Apparently, in one night, Beyonce won the same amount of Grammys that Whitney Houston has won in her entire career, and she topped Mariah Carey's five.

The grammy's recognizes their achievements.. if they did a bad song or some scandal, its part of the business, It shouldn't be taken personally.

It makes people have higher expectations for the people that receive them, then they loose most of there fans when they make one bad song.

Neither really. It generally exposes them to more people and increases their sales. If they are fake or real is entirely separate from this. A lot of fakes have won. Alison Krauss is as authentic as they come and she's won more than 2 dozen.

It neither helps nor hurts. The Grammys have become more of a reflection of commercial success over the years, rather than true musical achievement. Most of my favorite bands have not won any, but that does not mean they don't have great music.

I don't think it does much. I don't go to target and see a CD and think to myself 'Oh, Grammy winner, I should buy/illegally download this'
    It doesn't hurt them though.

whoever says a grammy hurts credibility is nuts.
would it hurt your credibility to be Employee of the year at your job? grammys are the same thing only on a much larger scale (the public eye).

employee of the month is based of performance and quality of work. a Grammy used to be something but nowadays they give them out too easily and for popularity not quality. plus the judges on these awards are so biased it makes my head spin

    Three words: A Popularity Contest.

I don't judge a band based on how many awards it has. Many of my bands aren't mainstream and aren't on the charts, so they are unlikely to win a Grammy.

    A popularity contest is right.

Honestly, I don't think a Grammy helps or hurts. It's totally irrelevant to how I judge bands. It's not an indication of selling out, nor does it validate or qualify a band in any way. The Rolling Stones, for example, has won just a single Grammy in its entire celebrated career, and in a non-competitive category: a lifetime achievement award in 1989. I can name dozens upon dozens of classic (and commercially successful) bands and singers who have never been awarded Grammys.

The Sane One, NARAS might have blundered by giving Jethro Tull the first metal award, but they've certainly paid Metallica back in kind in the years since. It's equally laughable to consider that Metallica has won the Best Metal Performance category almost every year that it's been nominated. Popularity contest, indeed.

The Grammy Awards are a complete wall-to-wall joke, but I don't think less of a band or artist for winning one. It's merely incidental.

All a Grammy is --is a popularity contest.

The Grammys hurt the credibility of musicians-- since they include Madonna in the rock category and gave Jethro Tull the first Heavy Metal Grammy (over Metallica.)

I don't see how a Grammy could ever hurt an artist's credibility. Winning a Grammy obviously means that the artist is doing something right, at least in the eyes of the Grammy committee. I think being recognized for hard work by winning awards always adds credibility, and it doesn't mean the artist is "selling out" like some people may believe.

Winning the Grammy helps your credibility with the mainstream. I can see how geeky insiders may see it as selling out... but they shouldn't blame the band -- blame the Grammy committee.
credibility mainstream geeky insiders selling blame band blame grammy committee
