Dodgers' Eugenio Velez Has Worst At-Bat Streak Ever: Give Up or Get Even?

There are so many records being set and broken it seems like anyone with a little bit of determination could figure out a way to break some kind of record. Dodgers reserve infielder Eugenio Velez proved it this season, and it's even easier than we thought. All he had to do was suck at batting 37 times in a row.

We could totally beat that.

Maybe not the kind of record he'll want to brag to his friends and family about, but a record nonetheless. Velez finished his 2011 season with a ground out on Wednesday, setting the MLB record for most consecutive at-bats with out a hit. Well, not counting pitchers. But still. The last time someone got anywhere near a 37 at-bat streak was 1936, when Hal Finney of the Pittsburgh Pirates failed to hit the ball 35 times in a row.

He's not a great infielder, either. A few games back, Baseball Nation predicted Velez' record-breaking season and offered a sketch of the guy's overall ability. They basically said he can't hit, can't bunt, can't play second base, and can't play outfield. They also noted that he's fast, but its been so long since anyone has seen him run the bases that it's hard to say anymore.

To be fair, the bad luck hasn't haunted him his entire career. He's even got 8 homers. Ever since Velez wore a misspelled jersey in 2010 when he was playing on the San Francisco Giants, it's been downhill.

Major League baseball is not easy to get in even as a nonstarter so he must of had done something right or have some type of ability. Stick with it.

I've heard of batting slumps, but 37 at-bats without a hit is just plain awful. And it's not just the fact that the L.A. Dodgers' Eugenio Velez had such a streak of bad luck [skill?] at the plate this season. Many teams will keep a crapulous hitter IF they have stellar defensive play. Evidently, this is not the case here, if this dude can't hit, bunt, or play infield or outfield. The fact that he can run fast cracks me up. Just the other day, my mother was telling me about a Cincinnati Reds player, Drew Stubbs, who finished the season with a plethora of strike-outs, but she said that he has some serious wheels. And I was like, well, you have to get on base first in order to run them! It sounds to me as if Velez should throw in the towel. I'm sure there are college baseball players out there who can perform better than him.

Sure there are, and there and a bunch in the minor leagues as well, but those guys will have to get there just as he did. It's not that easy. Obviously the kid has skills.

I agree. However, some guys who play well in the minors just can't reproduce their talents when they go to "the big show." [Now I've got to pull out my "Bull Durham" DVD and watch it! I think it's called "choking!" You know, I just realized that I know WAY too much about sports for a female tigger. I really should get out more! [Speaking of which, what an exciting weekend for college and pro football, huh? Lots of major comebacks! Of course, any weekend that Alabama wins is good for me. ROLL TIDE.]

Unfortunately I don't think your Tide are going to lose this year. And they shouldn't, they pay better than any other college program.

Not a very good start, but didn't Willie Mays begin his career going something like 1 for 54? He had begged Alvin Dark to send him back to the minors, but happily for the Giants and Baseball in general they kept him in the majors.

Look at the records Dodger. If we cant take it all then a good season is finishing ahead of the Dodgers. ;o) (all in fun).

Boston really faded, probably to the delight of the NYY. Hope Tampa pounds them. Dont think Atlanta was any match for Phili anyway.

I have always liked the DODGER/giant rivalry. Notice your team is in small letters lol. It has been fun to watch over the years. I grew up in the 50s and 60s and really loved the pitching match ups between Drysdale or Koufax against Marichal. Mays, McCovey, Cepeda and the Alou brothers (even though I hated them) were awesome to watch. I wish there were more rivalries like that in sports. Was all good until those idiots attacked the SF fan on opening day. Kind of made me quit going to the games altogether last year.
