What an odd coincidence that you post this today: it is a sad day for Whovians: rest in peace, Elisabeth Sladen. We already miss you.
Also, I can't really stand the eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith), I'm much more a fan of Ten (David Tennant), Nine (Christopher Eccleston), Five (Peter Davison) and One (William Hartnell). :\
Oh, and Doctor Who has been aired in the US for a LONG time and actually does have quite an American (and North American in general) following.
Get the facts, SH.

"Dr. Who" might not be as familiar to American audiences, but across the pond the charming, cheese-filled Timelord has been a staple TV ingredient off and on for more than 40 years. This Saturday, BBC America will premiere the newest season for its American audiences.
Matt Smith, the eleventh and current actor responsible for the series' lead role (they have kind of a James Bond thing going), gave Entertainment Weekly the scoop on the new season.
The newest season will even have one episode penned by "Coraline" writer Neil Gaiman.

I think Steven [Moffat, Doctor Who head writer and executive producer] is really pushing the form in terms of writing the show. He’s tailoring his writing more specifically than ever for me and Karen and Arthur, so that’s quite exciting.

I should really stop now....I should really really stop now...I just can't resist! xD
It would be awful if they were doing an American version of it though.
