Some cultures do that. My culture does it this way. We like our culture ways more than yours (I apologize if that offends you), Our way, it's traditional, and it leaves family relationships and inheritance clearly defined

Because I'm a man. She joined my family.

What a dumb thing to say. My parents have been married for 30 years (and happily, might I add) and my mom kept her last name. You are very ignorant.

Why must I follow your customs? This is only a issue to you. Not for us. We are Americans, its American tradition.
We wanted to create a family when we got married, so we are all the "Watson family" including dogs. When we bought a new VW for her she ordered a personal license plate "VW4MrsW"
    (real names not used)

Um, excuse me? I AM an American, and my mother is an American (some people on her side came to America in 1610) so don't tell me about any "customs."

I think it should be up to the person. If you have a last name that's not so great, you'd be happy to change it when you get married. By the same token, your significant other could have a last name that you wouldn't want.

I frankly don't care. I mean having two last names would only be confusing for the child, but I find nothing wrong with people staying with it or changing it.

We should leave some traditions alone. I don't know how gay people would do the name thing. I guess they'd have to decide which one is the man.

If the tradition is archaic and insulting you are ok with that? Why are men so scared of a strong woman?? Don't you want your daughters to be strong individuals??

I'm married to a strong woman and bull headed as hell. She started out wanting to keep her maiden name along with her married name, but was just confusing. She gave it up after a couple of years. Whats insulting about it? You start your own family with the husband as the patriarch, which means you take his name as does your children. Not supposed to be insulting.

It's only archaic to people that hate Judeo-Christian culture. You are assuming an awful lot. My girlfriend is very independent, and stong. But she likes tradition. Liberals may finally destroy my nation, but they can't destroy me. You won't believe it till it's too late. But you'll miss it when it's gone. If my culture insults you, too bad. Try being a little more tolerant of other people's views. I won't be bullied into abandoning my culture.

Archaic does not necessarily equate to bad. Why is taking your husband's name insulting? I am a very strong woman and I didn't hesitate to take my late husband's name, nor would I hesitate to do so again. My strength, individuality and self-worth does not hinge on a name.

    No other?

I think whoever wants the others name should take that name but if they want the names to stay put, go ahead :3

If they really love each other, it shouldn't matter.

It's really up to the woman herself. I'm a man, but if I was a woman, I'd hyphenate my name when I get married.

If she doesn't want to take my name because "it's a chauvinistic throwback" I guess that means I don't have to buy her an overpriced diamond.

Ha! My husband and I have been married for almost 22 years and he still brings it up! The children have his name so there is no confusion there. I don't mind if people call me Mrs. Husband's.

Studies have shown that women who do not use their husband's name make more money. The tradition when women were "property" -- Really, it's up to the individual. I am comfortable with the choice I made. Also, in my case . . . hyphenation would really be impossible! I wouldn't do that to my kids!

They can do whatever they want to. It really wouldn't matter to me either way.

Where's the "I don't care either way" option. If they want to, fine, if not, whatever.
