The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is still pursing legal action against Limewire, despite the site being shut down in 2010. The RIAA is claiming that Limewire owes $72 Trillion in damages. To put things into perspective, the combined GDP of the entire world is only $60 Trillion, and if you combine the US GDP with the US National Debt, you'd only get a grand total of $31 Trillion. So what this means is, the RIAA is claiming that they are owed more money than is in existence due to illegal downloads. Do you think this is crazy?

The question is are they being ridiculous. Being that $72 trillion is more than the entire world's GDP, doesn't that seem a little ridiculous?

The problem here is this. They would have never gotten their $72 Trillion even without illegal downloads. There just isn't that kind of money in the world.

"They're being quite reasonable. They're entitled to their cash. "

This, however, ASSUMES they're correct - the RIAA is not know for being entirely truthful - either way they need to PROVE, not just pull numbers out of their ass like they seem to do more often than not.

This just goes to show how desperate the recording industry has become. As bizarre as it may now seem, recording used to be a primary home entertainment activity for Americans. Can you believe that we used to just sit down and LISTEN to music? Now home entertainment needs to be multimedia (e.g., gaming and videos) to survive.

Its pathetically stupid, and had to do with nothing but greed. They just are taking every action possible to bleed every cent possible. Sure its wrong to download without permission, but get real, this has gone way past being about right and wrong
