Ellen DeGeneres is more than just a one dimentional person. Just because she does not sing for a living does not disqualify her has a judge of good music. Neither does she dance for a living but that does not mean she cannot find beauty, rhythm and style in a true performers movements. In the IDOL game there are many factions to consider. One of the biggest reasons for an Idol choice is talent... not just the base talent but moreover the PROMOTABLE AND SALEABLE talent. This, I think, is where she might be uniquely qualified... Like I said... she is not just a one dimentional person... She knows talent.

She can be quick witted but not in the same sense as Simon, he's more much more profound.

I don't even like to watch Ellen dance, she can't sing and has no viable music business experience.

Ozzy would be the best choice... because fairies wear boots... : )

She'll never be a good replacement for Paula. I am disappointed they chose her. With Simon leaving after this year, American Idol may well be on its way out.

She will bring many viewers to the show I believe. She is funny, smart, and a nice lady. Paula was getting to the point of being useless for the show. They made a good choice. She may not know much about singing but she will be useful when it comes to areas like stage presence and emotion and things like that. The show isn't all about your vocal ability you know.

By the way, you're incredibly rude.

Because Ellen on the show Chrsitian viewers like myself can no longer be a fan of the show & will not be watching/voting supporting it in any way! The whole show has changed for the worse in many ways. They promoted gay lifestyle which God's Word says is sin,. Yet, they put down the contestants on the show that try to stand for what they believe as Christians! Also, what qualifications does Ellen have to judge singing talent any way?

They aren't PROMOTING being homosexual just because they hired a homosexual. Gay or not, you have rights in this country. Get used to it. God's word says you're a sinner, so does that mean you aren't a fan of yourself? I'm Christian, and I will still watch the show and be a fan. Speak for yourself, but don't generalize and put everyone in the same extreme category you seem to be in. By the way, the show is more than just vocal ability, it is about entertainment, stage presence, and personality, something that Ellen knows A LOT about. She'll be great.

She's got a successful show that is a platform for all sorts of talent. Ellen will show the world what it's like to be a rich legally married lesbian with a hot wife. Maybe some of the hateful bible beaters will wake up and realize it's normal to be gay.

I'd consider Ellen more than just a talk show host. I'd consider her an entertainer. She does promote good music (regularly) on her show and she also is a major music consumer. The fact that she is referred to as some "gay" talk show host says to me that there is still a lot of predjudices out there in the world to be dealt with. But, enough of that and onto the real question at hand...

Ultimately, the viewing audience is who picks the winner on American Idol so, what difference does it make? The Judges are there mainly to inflict their opinion more for sheer entertainment value rather than that of some music master mind which I don't think any of them are. Did you watch the first Idol? The Spice Girl and the other female judge seemed to be more concerned with how they were dressed or if they'd be appropriate working in a "retail" setting and could wait on them at their favorite boutique than if they could actually sing! So, really, on these notes, I'd say that Ellen is more than qualified.

Frankly, I don't like the way that Paula left the show. But, I also think there were a few times on the show when I actually thought Paula was stoned or drunk. Was that just my imagination? So, was it justified or was there another reason (like she wanted too much money) or what??? I don'...

I don't think any of the judges left on the show are any more qualified than WE are to judge any of the performers.

Hey, if the performers can carry a tune, have a half way decent stage presence and can do these with out crumbling on the spot at an audition, they usually make it onto Am Idol and that in it's self is saying a lot. It's what they do AFTER they get that yellow piece of paper that IS what counts.

So, in the end...yes, I think Ellen DeGeneres will be a FINE addition to the show. Yes, I'll continue to watch because it is inspiring and heartbreaking to see what happens to these young people that go to those auditions and do manage to make it onto the show and finally, because I value MY opinion and those of my friends, relatives, and etc. because WE ARE the music buying public and we will have the final say in who REALLY wins these competitions or not.

Ellen knows as much about music as the rest of those puffed up entertainers that are on Idol as we speak! In the end, it's the viewing audience that call in and vote that decide who wins, so what difference is Ellen going to make?

...first off Ellen is a lot more than "just some gay talk-show host". That's like saying Racheal Ray is just some hot chef. She is one of the most personable, and likable people on television. Which is hard to find. She's one of the few remaining talk show hosts that people can actually relate too.

As for idol, I think it'll be interesting. I think Ellen has the potential to bring a non-biased, kind of regular listener thing to the show. And I think she won't be quite as nice as Paula. I don't know. Paula was just too nice. I mean really, Paula and Simon are about as qualified as Ellen is. They might both have the experience but their methods of critique leave much to be desired. Randy is the only one who manages to be constructive. Ellen might lack the musical knowledge but she has the ability to analyze things.

Besides, it's the viewing public that decides the winner and I guarantee you no matter how little Ellen has, she has more than the average slack-jaw that watches A.I.

I agree about her (Ellen) not knowing anything about music, not that I watch American Idol. I am however curious why its important to point out that she is a gay talk show host.
If it was Oprah would it be "she doesn't know much about singing she is just a straight talk-show host"

Your not watching the show does nothing but hurt the very young entertainers that are trying so despirately to make something of themselves. It won't hurt Paula or Simon or any of the other "celbrities" they have on the show to judge people for the sheer entertainment value. I think it's sad that you're letting someone you don't think is qualified (the people who run the show) decide for YOU who's got talent or who doesn't. It is you and the rest of the viewing public who decide who is the next American Idol and who isn't buy your call in votes.
So, get over it! Paula is gone and she's not coming back. Next season, Simon will be gone on to bigger and better things and like it or not, he wasn't that great of a judge to begin with!
